Marine Communications Technology

By: Ian

Based on ground-based radio Used by British royal navy in WW2 Big impact on modern day transportation Many new technologies with gps

Ground Based
Global positioning systems are based on communication systems designed and used on ground and follow the idea of multiple transmitters, transmitting to one central station

Use In The Royal Navy

Global positioning systems were introduced in WW2 by the British royal navy and has since be used by most countries as a way to navigate the oceans more effectively and for everyday travel by everyday people.

Today
Today a GPS can be bought at different but all relatively cheap prices from anywhere. They can also be found in many other technologies such as cell phones and other devices.

How many
There are 64 global positioning satellites in orbit as of may 2013 most by Navstar

Navstar
Navstar 1 was launched February 22, 1978 and was the first satellite to support GPS by Navstar and is still in use today. Navstar is the main company responsible for public use.

Creators
There were three men who were mainly responsible for the invention of the GPS. They are Ivan A. Getting, Bradford Parkinson and Roger L. Easton.

Gets its name from its wave lengths Wide spread usage world wide Very low cost and easy to use Poor quality audio

Name Comes From

It gets its name because the wave lengths in this band are shorter then 200 m (1500 kHz). Medium wave lengths are above this

Commonly Used
It so commonly use because of its low cost and its availability in almost all places around the world.

How it works
Radio waves are bounced off the ionosphere back to earth allowing it to be sent long distances and surpass the problem that the earth is curved

Audio Quality
Shortwave radios have poor audio quality do to the long range and shorter wave lengths. The sound becomes distorted when it bounces off the ionosphere.

Who invented
The innovator of the shortwave radio is Hugo Grensbank, he pushed the short wave radio and Ham or amateur radio into development at the same time.

Role In WW2
Shortwave radios during WW2 were mainly used for the spread of propaganda. Germany had high restrictions on their radios so nothing from other countries could be broadcasted across its people. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TURd_XV pwvk
