APPARATUS Sample extruder, consolidation ring, trimming equipment, filter paper, porous stone, consolidation cell, dial gauge,

loading arrangement, balance, stop watch, etc. PROCEDURE 1) Weighted the empty consolidation ring and mass was recorded, (m1) 2) Applied oil or silicon grease on inside surface of the ring. 3) The sample was extracted from the sampler (or trim carefully from soil lump) to fit the consolidation ring, (m2). 4) Weighed the mass of soil along with ring, (m2). 5) Kept soil from the trimming for water content determinations. 6) The thickness of the specimen was measured and recorded. 7) Placed the ring and specimen centrally on the bottom porous stone. Then, put the upper porous stone on the specimen and then the loading cap. 8) Adjusted the consolidometer into the loading device. Position the dial gauge to measured change in thickness of the sample. 9) Filled the consolidometer with water and apply seating load of 5kN/m2, left the sample for 24 hours so that the moisture equilibrium is reached. 10) The first load increment applied and simultaneously took deformation readings at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30, 60 minutes and 2, 4, 8 and 24 hours. 11) After 24 hours applied the increment load. The successive pressures usually employed were 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 kN/m2. i.e. double of that at the preceding stage. Repeated step (10).

12) On completion of the final loading, unloaded the specimen and the dial gauge readings were taken at the same time intervals as in step (10). Usually load is decreased to one fourth of the previous load. 13) The last unloading kept at a pressure of 5kN/m2 for 24 hours. 14) Removed the ring from the consolidometer, wiped the water from outside the ring. 15) The ring with the soil sample was weighted and mass recorded (m3). 16) The ring kept with soil into oven for 24 hours. 17) Weighted the dry specimen with the ring and recorded mass (m4). 18) Calculated and tabulated data in the table as in data acquisition. 19) Determined the void ratio for each stage of pressure after 24 hours. 20) Plotted void ratio versus log10 pressure graph to determine the compression index, Cc. 21) Plotted void ratio versus pressure graph to determine volume of compressibility, mv. 22) Plotted dial gauge reading versus t graph to determine coefficient of consolidation, cv using square root-time method.
