Architecture for Dogs

John Hill | 11.19.2012 | Film

Japanese cuteness pervades this video for "Architects for Dogs," a project of the Hara Design Institute that enlists 13 architects to create 13 pieces of architecture for different breeds. Most of the contributing architects are JapaneseKazuyo Sejima, Toyo Ito, Shigeru Ban, Kengo Kuma, and (appropriately) Atelier Bow-Wow, to name a fewbut the projects include a few foreign architects, such as MVRDV and Reiser + Umemoto. Viewers are encouraged to download drawings and watch videos to build a little piece of architecture for their own little dog.

Pictured is the D-Tunnel designed by Institute director Kenya Hara for the teacup poodle. As the architect describes it, "When the dog runs up the stairs, he ends up at just the right height to be face-to-face with a person...[it] is an apparatus for the purpose of naturally bringing dogs and humans eye to eye." As Hara's design makes clear, the 13 pieces of architecture are not doghouses but something else entirely. Some are containers, others are wearable; whatever the case, each responds to its particular breed in creative ways.
