Christie Coombs Recognized at State House

Unsung Heroines Receive Praises Boston, MA Representative Geoff Diehl (R- Whitman) was pleased to sponsor Christie Coombs, an Abington mother, last week as a recipient of the Unsung Heroine award. She is one of 83 women from across the state named this year as an Unsung Heroine by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women.
After the tragic death of her late husband, Jeffrey Coombs, who was killed on Flight 11 in the September 11 terrorist attacks, Christie began the Jeffrey Memorial Foundation in his honor. Christie and her three children Matthew, Meaghan, and Julia, experienced and understood the financial and emotional toll that stems from a death in the family. Since then, Christie has worked hard to give back to her community. Over the years, she has organized multiple concerts, road races, and food drives, raising and distributing about $50,000 annually to assist families who are in financial need because of a death or illness in their family. The Foundation also provides emotional support, and funds special outings and events for those families. [CC QUOTE] In addition to her efforts for the Foundation, Christie also serves as a Board Member on the Veterans Advisory Board, the Mass Military Heroes Fund as well as on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross. She is also a contributor to the daily Boston Globe South and Patriot Ledger. [GD QUOTE]

The Unsung Heroines are women who dont make the news, but make the difference. They are mentors, volunteers and innovators who do what needs to be done without the expectation of recognition or gratitude. These women are the glue that keeps a community together, and every community has them.
Wednesdays reception included a greeting from Senator Gale Candaras and Representative Ruth Balser as well as Liz Brunner, co-anchor at News Center 5.
