ANNIVERSARY CAMP 2007/2012 BY SASO STANOJKOVIK

For the exhibition Daring to Remember Pictures of Places / Pictures as Places of Remembrance I propose a series of three photographs of the Womans Park located in the city centre of Skopje. The Womens Park was the main location of the protests of laid-off workers who lived in an improvised camp for more than a year trying to voice up their requests for social security and support. The photographs became the only document of this camp and memorize the poverty and misery of the life conditions in this one-year camp of the workers who saw themselves as innocent victims of the transition from one to another economic system. In that sense this project builds up a photographic monument to solidarity with the workers - victims of transition in Macedonia. Installation: 3 digital photographs 50x70 cm, a cake The three photographs are part of a larger project that addressed the year-long protests of the self-organized Union of laid-off workers who in February 2007 established a camp in the local city park in front of the Parliament building in Skopje, Macedonia. I documented most of the important everyday events from the life of this community and I attended the birthday party, actually the anniversary that they organised after a year of promises and lies told by different ruling party members and the Prime minister who only used their great expectations for collecting election votes. Side by side to the projection I imagine to install a cake-sculpture - a copy of the cake with which the protestors celebrated the anniversary of their protests camp.
