Reactions of Alkanes and Alkenes with Bromine Discussion Results The results that were produced when the

experiment neared completion were as expected. The individual reactions of the Cyclohexane and Cyclohexene with the Bromine water occurred (albeit the reaction involving Cyclohexane occurred at a very slow rate), based on the colour changes. NOTE: The assumption could be made that the Cyclohexane reacted with the Bromine water based on the presence of UV radiation and not because of colour change. Accuracy The experiment produced results which were of considerable accuracy. The same quantities of Bromine water were measured and poured into each test tube to provide a more accurate comparison. The same was done for the quantities of Cyclohexane and Cyclohexene. Insufficient or excess amount of any chemicals were avoided (Possibly extremely small amounts but not so much that would significantly affect the accuracy of the results that were produced). Reliability The results that were produced could be possibly, though unlikely, unreliable. The experiment was only performed once and as such the results that were produced could be totally random. Validity The experiment that was designed allowed us to test what we set out to test. Improvements, though small, could be made for several steps. The controlled variable that we had was a test tube with bromine water in it (with no added chemicals) to test whether it had colour change. Results were checked and confirmed with online sources like university websites, school websites, and scientific journals. Relevance This experiment has significance as it shows how alkanes and alkenes differ in terms of their reactivity and their ability to react under certain conditions.
