Philosophy Statement 2

Philosophy Statement There are many different philosophies when it comes to teaching. Everyone has their own ideas on what should be taught in schools and how it should be taught. It takes time to figure out your beliefs and are changing all the time. The philosophies in the book that best describes my personality are Essentialism and Social Reconstructionism. There are aspects within those philosophies that are pertinent such as acquiring the basic skills needed to function in todays world and social issues. I like the idea of teaching students essential knowledge that they will use in the real world. I also like the idea of group discussions and projects. According to my philosophical beliefs all schools should teach student skills that they will use as adults in the real world and I also believe in teaching equality. This would allow the students to grow up to be well rounded, respectful people. The Essentialism philosophy states that specific knowledge and skills exist that all people should possess. I believe that to be true. The teachers role is to help students master essential content according to the Essentialism philosophy. This means the teacher should focus on essential knowledge and skills. However, the students role is to have frequent objective and performance assessments and feedback. According to the Social Reconstructionism philosophy, the teachers role is to encourage students to think about their personal role in making the world a better place. This means the teacher should focus on social issues. I learn best by group discussions and visual learning. Subject material should be taught using group discussions, collaboration, some lecturing and student projects. This should be partially decided by the student, due to their interests and partially by the teacher, due to her curriculum. This is stated in the Essentialism philosophy and the Social Reconstructionism

philosophy. A philosophy is important because it makes us more aware of who we are as teachers and how we want to teach our students. Therefore, the Essentialism philosophy and the Social Reconstructionism philosophy or certain aspects of several are important to the governance of my life.
