Parts of the Nephrons Renal corpuscle or Malphigian corpuscles or Marphilgian Body A mass of arterial capillaries enveloped in a capsule and

d attached to a tubule in the kidney and the bodies which filter fluids out of the body. Glomerulus- a ball of coiled-up capillaries at the center of each renal corpuscle. Bowmans capsule- is the outer part of each renal corpuscle. Uriniferous tubules or renal tubules- long tubes, each one leading from a Bowmans capsule. Three main parts: Proximal convoluted tubules-contains useful substances and waste products Loop of Henle- useful substances are re-absorbed here Distal convoluted tubules- containing waste products Collecting duct or collecting tubules- a tube w/c carries from several uriniferous tubules into the pelvis of a kidney.

Renal function and Age Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) describes the flow rate of filtered fluid through the kidney. Creatinine clearance rate (CrCl) is the volume of blood plasma that is cleared of creatinine per unit time and is a useful measure for approximating the GFR.

Hormones of Kidney 1. Erythropoietin- regulates the production and release of red blood cells from the bone marrow. 2. Renin- an enzyme released by the kidney when blood pressure falls, acts on a protein in the blood to produce angiotensin 3. Angiotensin- also controls the release of aldosterone, an adrenal hormone that acts on the tubules to promote reabsorption of sodium and excretion of potassium.
