Langston Hughes What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?

Langston Hughes use of the five senses is essential to the poem. We can visualize a dry raisin, smell rotten meat, taste the sweet syrup, feel a heavy load, and hear the explosion. We can relate to the poem because we have

experienced the
actions described because of our senses. However, if my dream gets deferred, it will be a thorn at my side until I deal with it.
