How to Run STAR-CD and KIVA3V Simulations for the Sandia Engine

This is a draft document that outlines how to run simulations for the Sandia
Engine operated by Paul Miles.

Overview Steps:
1. Receive Data from Paul Miles.
2. If a STAR-CD simulation has not been run for the data defined in step 1,
set up and run STAR-CD.
(a) If need to use different engine speed, change engine speed in
input.movegrid, events.inp and ufile/posdat.f files. Also correct
running time according with new engine speed should be set in
these files.
(b) Run executable file to start pro-star (for Keith’s cases, the
executable file to start pro-star is prol-xm).
(c) Change boundary condition in the following steps: EASI-GUI ->
Setting up analysis -> Inputting boundary values.
(d) Change initial condition in the following steps: Module -> Property.
(e) If step (c ) occur, reconnect transient file by doing following: Module
-> Transient -> Connect.
(f) Connect events file by executing “evfi conn” in command window.
(g) Write out geometry file by click file -> write geometry.
(h) Write out problem file by click file -> write problem.
(i) Save your work by click file -> save 16 before quitting.
(j) Run pmovlink, input information as being asked.
(k) Run starlink, input information as being asked.
(l) Start running STAR-CD.
3. Run the ‘axial’ program to create an itapeVEL input file for the kiva
simulation. The coordinates and crank angles to use with ‘axial’ will be
supplied by Paul Miles.
4. If a STAR-CD simulation has not been run, use the results from steps 2
and 3 as input to your kiva simulation for the data defined in step 1.
If a STAR-CD simulation has previously been run, locate the map.dat and
itapeMAP files from that run and use them as inputs to kiva for the data
defined in step 1. Create a new itapeVEL file if necessary, or locate an
existing one.
5. Run the kiva simulation.
6. Use the ‘extract’, or ‘der’ programs to extract information from the
‘dumpvel.dat’ created by kiva and supply results to Paul Miles.
7. Use k3tom5 to make ensight files, or the equivalent in Fieldview and make
animations in areas of interest.
