Due Tues., Jan. 28, 2014

1. ODE practice, I. Solve the following ODE: dx + x = 1, dt where > 0 is a constant. Graph a x(t) and show the large-time asymptotic behavior as t . 2. ODE practice, II. Solve the following ODE: dx d2 x + + 2 x = 0, 2 dt dt where , > 0 are positive constants. This is the damped harmonic oscillator equation. Show that the general solution may be written in the form x(t) = Ae 2 sin (t + ) . Express A, , and in terms of all the parameters using the initial data x(0) = x0 dx(0) = V0 . Discuss the behavior of x as t , assuming 4 2 > 2 . dt 3. ODE practice, III. Solve the following ODE: x2 d2 y dy + x + 4y = 0. 2 dx dx

Just write the general solution for this equidimensional equation (without initial data you cannot solve for the two integration constants). Solve this equation in two ways: (i) First transform the independent variable x = et and show that the resulting equation has constant coecients. Use the usual substitution y = ert thereafter. (ii) Equivalently, without transforming the equation, suppose that solutions take the form y = xr and determine the general solution.
