Brief overview of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Hooghly Engineering & Technology College

Hooghly Engineering & Technology College started the Mechanical Engineering Department in the year of 2010. But through a very short span of three years the department has been setting up gradually very high standards in terms of infrastructure as well as quality education as per need of the present day with the help of a group of extremely dedicated and knowledgeable fa culty and technical staff members with the active supports from members of all other departments as well as administration. The department has an intake capacity of 60 + 3 students in the first year. Another 12 students are admitted in the second year through lateral entry. The first batch of the department will graduate in the year 2014. Beside the theory classes the department provides ample laboratory facilities and hands-on training to the students. As mechanical engineering is basically core industry based subject so the students are motivated to give full devotion to the future professional career in industry. This department has already developed different laboratories which have wide industrial applications in various sectors. For example there is the Manufacturing Technology Lab, Machining & Machine Tools Lab, Material Testing Lab, Applied Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer Lab, Thermal power Engineering Lab, I. C. Engine Lab, Air-conditioning & Refrigeration Lab, Metrology & Measurement Lab, Machine Drawing Lab, Computer-aided Design Lab, Applied Mechanics Lab, Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulic Machines Lab, Dynamics of Machines Lab etc. as per WBUT syllabus. The department also extend support to the first year students of all branches in their theoretical subjects like Engineering Mechanics and Engineering Thermodynamics & Fluid Mechanics as well as practical subjects like Basic Engineering Drawing & Computer Graphics which includes training on Auto CAD software and Workshop Practice and hands-on training in the conventional machining and other traditional trades like Smithy, Forging, Welding, Foundry and Pattern Making. The department have started organizing student certification training programme in collaboration with Trident Techlabs on CAD/CAM/CAE using CREO PARAMETRIC software during semester recesses. The industrial applications of the various laboratories conducted during the course are listed below. Laboratory name Manufacturing Technology Industrial application Wide application in moulding, casting and forging industry. Welding is used in fabrication, construction industry, structural and pressure vessel industries Modern manufacturing industry, tool and die making industry. Widely used in various industries for studying the microstructures of metals and improving their performances (strength, durability etc). Designing of power plant, turbine, pumps, 4-stroke engine industries. Thermal power plants Widely used in automobile industry. Cold storage, construction industries for setting up shopping malls, hotels etc. Used in industries to check precision instruments. Needed in any mechanical engineering industry for designing, producing and manufacturing various machine components. Industries related to design 2D & 3D model, and different types of analysis and simulation of mechanical components. Testing the mechanical properties of materials used in various industries including construction industry. Hydroelectric power plant, irrigation, water pipe line systems. Vibration analysis and balancing is widely used in core industry. In all manufacturing and production industries.

Soldering, Gas cutting Making a wooden pattern by using different pattern tools , wood turning lathe machine and Sandering machine Making a sand mould.
