Readers will use prior knowledge and inquiry as pre-reading strategies. Identify and define key vocabulary Using key vocabulary, create relevant sentences around a clear topic Use inquiry and prior knowledge to create relevant questions around a specific topic Read with a purpose in mind

Interdisciplinary Links: pre-reading strategies for texts with bold words, subtitles, captions KWL chart give students vocabulary words. Using these words, create sentences that you think you might find in the text. Put the words together in a way that makes sense (in groups one sentence per person). Add all the sentences to the left column in your chart. Share these one from each group on the board. In the next column, create questions that these sentences bring about. After reading all the sentences, what are you wondering? What do you think you might learn from this text? Send one person to a different group - share your questions (should now have 6). Read introduction out loud. Were we on track with our original sentences? Do we need to change them at all? Did we find the answers to any questions? Discuss.
