Scramble for Africa 8E

Dana Andreeva

Before that age of colonization there was the age of exploration. In the age of exploration European countries were discovering the new world, led by three reasons God, Glory and Gold. When Africa was discovered, it was wanted land as it was rich with diamonds and undivided. In 1488 John II of Portugal found the "Cape of Good Hope" (Cabo da Boa Esperana). This discovery opened a sea route to India and the East that was commonly used for trade. The Atlantic slave trade took place on the Atlantic Ocean from the 16th century to the 19th century. The majority of slaves transported to the New World were Africans and were sold by Africans to European slave traders that sold them to America.

Scramble for Africa 8E

The Scramble for Africa was a time period in which six European countries (Spain, France, Italy, Great Britain, Portugal, and Belgium) wanted a part of Africa. To make sure that no wars were fought over the land from 1884-85 there was a conference held in Berlin. The Berlin Conference was where all six countries gathered and discussed territories and made compromises. In the comic above I wanted to show that The Berlin Conference was treated like a dinner party. Giving away countries, lands, and people, was treated like giving away drinks.

Scramble for Africa 8E

After each country got its part of Africa, the age of colonization and imperialism continued. In this age there were also three reasons to colonize or imperialize: Christianity, Commerce and Civilization. European countries thought they were better then African countries since they were Christians, therefore they felt it was their duty to spread Christianity and civilized manners. Trade or commerce was another reason to take over countries with raw materials. In the comic above a baker is molding Africa into Europe and showing how it cant fit because of the diversity between these two continents. The long-term effects were that even after African countries got their freedom the territories and borders stayed the same. Since the borders were not clear many civil wars were fought over territories. The latest war being The Tuareg Rebellion of 2012 in which war was raged against the Malian Government by rebels with the goal of achieving independence for a northern province of Mali, known as Azawad.
