Interdisciplinary Instruction Action Plan

Interdisciplinary Action Plan 2013-2014 This plan represents the required components of a New Era Educational Leadership Academy. During the 2013 2014 school year, WCPS embarked on the full implementation of the Common Core State Standards. This new curriculum, the new teacher evaluation tool, and the new student information system were a few of the new initiatives that required professional development and a learning curve to occur for this school system. Planning Process This team (Kathy Stiles, Principal; Denise Hunt, Administrative Intern; and Michelle Talbert-Smith, Assistant Principal) researched current trends related to interdisciplinary instruction and reviewed current WCPS initiatives in order to develop this plan.

Needs Assessment For the approximately the past twelve years WCPS has provided elementary teachers with a scope and sequence for core content areas written by Curriculum and Instruction Specialists that was based on the Maryland State Curriculum. In conjunction with this scope and sequence, county-wide benchmark assessments were also written by these same Curriculum and Instruction Specialists and implemented county-wide at established intervals. With the transition to the Common Core these resources and supports no longer clearly align. Teachers are being asked to unpack the Common Core Standards. Map out or scroll (long range plan), locate resources and materials, create assessments, develop rubrics, plan daily lesson, differentiate lesson plans, analyze data, maintain information in their on-line grade books, and provide quality instruction daily. Schools are at various places in this process based on many factors that include: administrative tenure, CES involvement, Title I, Arete school, and professional development funds.
