Lesson: Electric Circuits and Schematics Grade/subject: 5th grade/ Science Objective: Students will be able to: Create

e an electric circuit by completing a closed loop that includes wires, a battery (or batteries), and at least one other electrical component to produce observable change Draw electrical schematics for the circuits they have formed Determine why or why not their circuit design was successful and repair it if needed Determine if the circuits they generate are parallel or series and explain why Procedure: 1. The students will be given one AA battery and a pre-cut single Christmas light. They will be asked to complete a circuit using only the materials provided 2. The students will draw their attempts at designing a circuit, using electrical schematics (learned in the STEM program) and identify the type of circuit they have created 3. They will then explain how their circuit works or why they think it did not work 4. They will be asked to think critically about ways the circuit can be altered to make the bulb shine brighter. 5. Students will model the use of various sized batteries (AA, AAA, and 9V) and compare and contrast the strength of the light emitted 6. Students will work with a partner to create a circuit with one battery and two light bulbs. They will be asked to draw the electrical schematic for this circuit and explain how it differs from the first circuit they had created. Standards 5.2.4.D.1 - Electrical circuits require a complete loop through conducting materials in which an electrical current can pass. 5.2.6.D.1- The flow of current in an electric circuit depends upon the components of the circuit and their arrangement, such as in series or parallel. Assessment Methods: Observation- The students will be assessed formatively for understanding by observation throughout the lesson. Subjective response questions- A hand out will be provided to the students in which they will record all data and respond to questions. The electrical schematic drawings they complete will be an assessment of their understanding of the concept and correct use of the symbols they have learned in the STEM program. Constructed-response performance assessment- The answers to the questions on the data sheet will allow the teacher to assess whether or not the students could perform the desired task and explain their results in writing.
