The first seismograph was called the Cheng Hengs Dragon Jar. One of the dragons faces was to be looking north. If an earthquake was to happen, one of the marbles in one of the eight dragon heads would fall into a frogs mouth below the dragon head. This was invented in 132 AD. The second seismograph was called James Forbes Seismometer. This was introduced to the world in 1844. This was designed with the inverted pendulum mounted on a stiff wire with a wire hanging down. If it were disturbed, it would swing, and then it would return to the starting position. The next one was Robert Mallet-1851 Seismoscope. Robert Mallet would study earthquakes by measuring the velocity of elastic waves generated by explosions. Robert Mallets assumed earthquakes consisted of longitude motions. This was proven wrong once seismometers were built. Cecchis seismograph has been considered the first true seismograph. It is similar to the seismograph in many ways: It looks the same, it takes the same sort of readings, and the modern seismograph is sort of based off of the Cecchi seismograph. They have similar properties.
