Koichi Kawai, our founder, was born in Hamamatsu, Japan
in 1886. As he entered his teens, young Koichi began working
in the piano industry. He was a key member of the research and
development team that rst introduced pianos to Japan.
A talented inventor, Koichi Kawai was the rst to design and build a
piano action in Japan. He held many patents for his inventions and
designs.
In 1927, Koichi Kawai founded the Kawai Musical Instrument
Research Laboratory, employing seven other kindred individuals.
As a young company, the only thing that supported them was their passion for music and desire
to produce superior pianos. Koichis fundamental principles were centered around quality, music
appreciation and the quest for excellence. Tese basic principles inspire and direct Kawai to this day.
After Koichi Kawais death in 1955, Shigeru Kawai became
company president at the young age of 33. Shigeru was determined to
remain true to his fathers ideals. He foresaw rapid growth in the music
industry and planned accordinglyexpanding production facilities and
establishing a number of organizations to promote the value of music.
Resourceful and innovative, Shigeru became the
evolving link between the age of skilled handwork and
modern technology. In 1980, he opened the Ryuyo
Grand Piano Facility recognized today as the most
advanced piano-building facility
in the world.
Hirotaka Kawai, appointed president in 1989,
remains committed to carrying on the tradition established
by his father and grandfather. In arming their
philosophy, he states, At Kawai, the quest for perfection
is not just an ideal... but a duty. Under Hirotakas
guidance, the company embarked upon a program which
invested tens of millions of dollars to integrate advanced
robotics into the manufacturing process. He has also
directed the establishment of Kawai manufacturing
facilities in locations around the globe. Tus, the tradition
of family leadership at Kawai
lives on from generation to
generation.

En 1927, Koichi KAWAI a fond le Laboratoire de Recherche KAWAI, qui employait 7 autres
chercheurs. Comme toute socit nouvelle, leur seul soutien tait leur passion pour la musique et le
dsir de fabriquer des pianos de qualit. Les principes essentiels de Koichi KAWAI taient centrs sur
la qualit, la valorisation de la musique et la qute de lexcellence. Ces principes de base inspirent et

1927 grndete Koichi Kawai das Kawai Musikinstrumente Entwicklungslaboratorium und stellte
sieben Mitarbeiter ein, die seine Liebe zum Klavierbau teilten. Die Basis dieser frischgegrndeten
Firma war allein die Liebe zur Musik und der Wunsch aller Mitarbeiter, die besten Pianos zu
bauen. Koichis Grundstze legten die Mastbe fr die Qualitt, die Musikalitt und seinen
Perfektionsanspruch. Diese Grundstze leiten Kawai bis zum heutigen Tag.
Nachdem sein Vater gestorben war, bernahm 1955 Shigeru Kawai im Alter von 33 Jahren die
Prsidentschaft. Er sah das schnelle Wachstum der Pianoindustrie voraus, plante dementsprechend
grozgige Produktionssttten und grndete eine Reihe von Organisationen und Institutionen, um
der Musik zu einem noch hheren Stellenwert zu verhelfen.
Einfallsreich und innovativ wurde Shigeru Kawai das Bindeglied zwischen den Handwerkern, die
alle Arbeitsgnge mit der Hand durchfhrten, und der modernen Zeit der maschinellen Fertigung.
Im Jahr 1980 ernete Shigeru Kawai die neue Ryuyo Flgelfabrik, die auch heute noch als die
modernste und innovativste Flgelfabrik der Welt angesehen wird.
Hirotaka Kawai, der 1989 zum Prsidenten ernannt wurde, ist sich der Verpichtung die
Familientradition, die er von Vater und Grovater bernommen hat, weiterzufhren bewusst. Seiner
Philosophie folgend sagt er heute: Das Streben zur Perfektion ist nicht nur ein Ideal sondern eine
Verpichtung. Unter seiner Fhrung hat Kawai ein Programm begonnen, bei dem einige Millionen
EURO in die Fertigung durch computergesteuerte Produktionsstraen investiert werden. Er ordnete
ebenfalls die Grndung von Kawai-Produktionssttten berall auf der Welt an. Auch hier lebt die

Over 75 years ago, a legacy was born as Koichi Kawai labored diligently in his small
workshop in Hamamatsu, Japan. Te determined spirit of the master builder lives today in
the Shigeru Kawai Research and Development Laboratory, where our renowned Master Piano
Artisans patiently build one of the worlds nest instruments, the EX Concert Piano. Combining
our time-tested methods of origin (the meticulous handwork techniques of the piano craft) with
the most sophisticated piano-design tools of our day, each EX Concert Piano is conceived as a next
step in the evolving art of the piano each one striving to be better than the last. Te scarcity
of materials used and the painstaking attention devoted to each EX Concert Piano make these
instruments rare indeed. Fewer than twenty are crafted each year for all the world.

Tone is the rich, resonant sound quality that emanates from a well-crafted piano.
A ne instrument should be capable of producing exceptional tone through the full range of
musical expression powerful, delicate, short, long, fast or slow. Whatever the dynamic
requirement, the piano must respond with a clear and expressive sound that reects the

THE SOUNDBOARD
Te soundboard is the very heart of the pianos tone. Its purpose is to transform the vibrations of the pianos
strings into a beautiful, resonant tone. Kawai uses only straight-grained, quarter-sawn solid spruce for all grand piano
soundboards. Each one is tested with state-of-the-art equipment to measure the speed at which sound energy travels
through it. Only those soundboards that exceed our demanding resonance standards are selected for use in Kawai
grand pianos.
RESONANZBODEN

LA TABLE DHARMONIE

THE CORE SYSTEM
CORE is an acronym representing Convergence for
Optimum Reected Energy. Convergence refers to the way
the pianos strength centersrim, plate and underside beams all
focus toward one central point at the heart of the instrument.
Tis focus creates an incredibly strong core foundation that
maximizes the reective capabilities of the inner rim.
Te material used for the inner rim is also critical. Te harder
the inner rim material, the more sound energy will be reected
back into the soundboard for optimum resonance.
RX Series inner rims are made of Matoa, an extremely dense
hardwood that ensures maximum reection of sound energy,
resulting in greater tonal power and sustain.
DAS CORE SYSTEM
Das englische Akronym Core steht fr Convergence for
Optimum Reected Energy, auf deutsch: Zusammenlaufen von
optimal reektierter Energie. Gemeint sind die Fokussierung
verschiedener Spannungstrger eines Flgels - Rahmen,
Platte, Raste - auf das zentrale Energiezentrum im Herzen des
Instrumentes hin. Diese Fokussierung oder Spannungssteuerung
schat einen Kern enorm kulminierter Energie, durch den die
Leiteigenschaften fr Klangwellen des Innenrahmens maximiert
werden.
BRIDGES
Bridges transfer the vibrations of the strings to the
soundboard. RX Series bass bridges are made of the highest
quality hard maple or beech. Treble bridges are vertically
laminated with 13 layers of maple and mahogany for maximum
strength and optimal transfer of sound. Te RX-6 and RX-7
feature a single, continuous bridge that helps to smooth the
transition between bass and treble registers.

Kawai made history in the early 1970s when we began to introduce piano actions featuring ABS Styrana strong, stable material
that solved many of the problems associated with wood (most notably, shrinking and swelling) in the ne workings of an action. Over
the next two decades, these designs were steadily rened and improved until the unveiling of our Ultra-Responsive ABS Action in
the 1990s. Tis action, with its intelligent use of ABS Styran and other composite materials, continues to outperform traditional all
wooden actions in the areas of reliability, durability and long-term consistency of touch.
Now, in celebration of the 21st century, Kawai is proud to introduce the third generation of the piano action
the Millennium III. Tis revolutionary new action utilizes innovative materials and design techniques to provide even greater satisfaction
to the player.
ABSCARBON
Te infusion of carbon bers into ABS material makes our exclusive ABS-Carbon parts
incredibly strong and rigid. Te controlled orientation of the bers produces tremendous
directional strengthhelping to create an action that is vastly superior to traditional all wooden
actions in terms of stability and durability. Plus, the added rigidity of ABS-Carbon helps
reduce energy loss in the action mechanismoering the player more power with less eort.

RIM AND BEAM CONSTRUCTION
Te RX Series rims are built using cross-binding and
lamination techniques to form a structure that is, pound for
pound, stronger than steel. Te beams are made of select
hardwood laminates, glued together under pressure, making them
virtually isotropic (equally strong in all directions) and
impervious to weather changes and warpage.

PLATE CONSTRUCTION
Te plate is the acoustically-neutral, iron superstructure
of the piano over which the strings are tensioned. All RX
Series plates are molded using the Vacuum Mold Process (V-Pro).
Added strength comes from the plates Crossbone Design. Te
result is a plate which is strong, stable and beautiful.

KEYSLIP
A pianos keyslip is the long, horizontal piece of wood that
covers the front faces of the keys. Because it is made of wood, a
keyslip can warp or bend with changes in humidity, causing keys
to stick. RX Series keyslips are reinforced with a steel inside liner
that prevents warping or bending in any direction. Keys move
freely as the keyslip remains straight and evenly distanced from the
key faces throughout the life of the piano.
TASTENVORSATZLEISTE

horizontale en bois bordant la face avant des notes. Du fait quelle est

Mahogany hammers are lightweight and extremely
responsive. Found on only the nest grand pianos, mahogany
is used for hammer mouldings on the entire line of RX Series

In 1997, Kawais Ryuyo Grand Piano Facility became the rst
manufacturing plant in the piano industry to receive ISO 14001,
the worlds foremost certication for excellence in environmental
management. In 1998, Kawai was privileged to receive a second
ISO 14001 certication recognizing exceptional achievement in
re-forestation, energy conservation, waste reduction and natural
resource preservation at our highly respected Maisaka Upright
Piano Factory. In 1999, Kawai made history for a third time when
ISO 14001 certication was awarded to our Mrchen Digital
Piano Facility. Tis unceasing pursuit of environmental excellence
is our way of saying that we care about our world... and you.
ISO 14001 Certication, the worlds most prestigious
environmental award, was established by the International
Organization for Standardization the governing body for a
worldwide federation of national standards organizations. To
become a candidate, a company must demonstrate a history of
innovative, self-governing environmental policies and initiatives
designed to preserve valuable resources, reduce industrial wastes,
protect or improve the environment, and meet all legislative
regulations in the course of pursuing its social and economic goals.
