This is the central Theme in this surah( Safet# a!ainst fear ,min khawf- - this is &ro en throu!h surah 'eel( .mar woul% recite this surah in Ma!hrib &ra#er$ an% in the firstraka/ak he woul% recite surah at-Teen( 0n the secon% raka/ah he woul% recite 'eel an% "ura#sh without &lacin! the basmallah [bismillahi ar-1ahmani ar-1aheem] between them( This is what Ab%ullah ibn Mas/u% woul% %o too( The# knew the# were 2 se&arate surahs/ - but the# %i% it to show theclose connection between these 2 surahs/(

Allah alone without ha in! to worr# about business%ealin!s( <et the# are still kee&in! themsel es bus# in worl%l# affairsD 5henAllah has &ro i%e% them so the# can worshi& himD A short stor#+ ?rother Nouman mentions a Muslim Doctor:=h#sician who works =art time$ an% earns E100$000 &er #ear( The &eo&le ask him wh# he %oesn/t work fulltime to earn EF00$000 &er #earD 4e tells them that Allah has &ro i%e% him enou!h$ an% that he can s&en% his other time memori3in! "ur/an an% rememberin! Allah etc( So the fact that the "ura#sh ha e enou!h mone# - the# shoul%n/t waste more time on worl%l# matters - the# shoul% s&en% the time the# ha e now on softenin! their heart an% !ettin! closer to Allah(

Quraysh - ta!arrush - to !ather &eo&le from man# %istances( 1st6 The# were a gathering of many dispersed people b# the man al Mu9/im ,%escribe% in tafseer surah 'eel-( 2n%6 Qarsh A massive &east in the ocean#A whale or octo&us that can %estro# shi&s( An% it cannot be o er&owere% eGce&t b# fire ,an% itcannot be %estro#e% b# fire because it is in the water - a sa#in! of the Arabs-( "ura0sh is a tas!heer:smallene% ersion of this bi! &owerful beast( 0(e( The# are bi! an% &owerful$ but the# are smaller than it( ,i(e( 4asan is a name to mean beautiful( A small &erson calle% 4asan is 4usa<n$ or .mar an% .ma<r ,little .mar$ /Ab% an% .ba<% ,little sla e-$ "arsh an% "ura<sh etc( This tas!heer:makin! small can also ma!nif# them( i(e( 5e mi!ht 9okin!l# call a tall &erson - short$ or a thin &erson - /fatt#/ ,fat-( etc( So "ura0sh in tasgheer [smallness] form can actuall# im&l# the# are &owerful an% bi!( ) en thou!h tas!heer:smallness is use% in lan!ua!e( 0bn Abbas was askes% wh# are the# calle% "ura#shD 4e re&lie%+ Because the beast in the ocean eats - but it is not eaten. at-Tabari an% "urtubi6 the winter is associate% with lack of foo%$ an% the warm climate was when the thief tribes woul% steal from cara ans ,the# woul% sta# insi%e in the winters because it was reall# col% then(So Allah mentions the economical &roblem first$ an% then the safet# &roblem last( ?ecause the main theme in this surah is the economics( 3ihla is singular - the tra ellin! of the "ura#sh were reall# two 9ourne#s &er #ear( The reason wh# Allah mi!ht mention it as one 1ihla ,as o&&ose% to 1ihlata#n:taan- for this is because the tra ellin!s from one location to the other was like one continuous tra%e( The "ura#sh woul% tra el an% tra%e at one &lace$ come back to Makkah an% tra%e abit$ then !o %irectl# to their other location for bu#in! an% sellin!( 0(e( 0emen to Makkah, then to (yria and &ack to Makkah and 0emen throughout the year# 7ustlike one continuous 6ourney#

Br is it that the# ha e not seen$ [ha e not] realise%$ that 5e ha e a&&ointe%$ their town of Mecca to be$ a secure Sanctuar#$ while &eo&le are snatche% awa# all aroun% themD$ b# bein! kille% or taken ca&ti e$ eGce&t for themD 0s it that the# belie e in falsehoo%$ [in] the i%ol$ an% are [wont to be] un!rateful for @o%Js !raceD$ when the# ascribe &artners to 4imD [al Ankabut 2K66C] All &eo&le from mankin% woul% be robbe%$ ki%na&&e% an% their wealth stolen - eGce&t in the sanctuar# of Makkah( 5hen a man was ki%na&&e% - The thiefs woul% then lea e abit of mone# forhim so he coul% tra el back an% the# coul% rob him a!ain in the future when he tra els a!ain( This is a bi! fa our on "ura#sh that the# %o not eG&erience this( Min 6oo' -from hunger; - &ro i%es them+ despite hunger, 9e gave them food, when there is no land fertile land for fruit, crops etc# in the &arren dry city of Makkah# An% there is no real securit# there either - eGce&t because Allah has !i en it( ?ecause Makkah is in the mi%%le of the %esert - it shoul% reall# be o&en to attack( ?ut %es&ite that - Allah has !i en them securit#(( <ur Lord, 8 have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near 0our sacred 9ouse, our ;or%$ that the# ma# establish &ra#er( So make hearts amon! the &eo&le incline towar% them an% &ro i%e for them from the fruits that the# mi!ht be !rateful( [0brahim 1*67C]

Allah selects the best wor%s in 4is S&eech for the best conteGt+ An% 5e will surel# test #ou with somethin! of fear an% hunger an% a loss of wealth an% li es an% fruits$ but !i e !oo% ti%in!s to the &atient$ [al ?a8arah 261FF] 5e will test #ou with fear an% hun!er( 0n this surah ["ura#sh] - 4e mentione% hun!er first an% then khawf [fear]( Allah mentione% the battle of ?a%r Bne of the conse8uences of battle is econonomic loss$ but fear is more %an!erous( 0n this surah - the economic situation is more im&ortant - so Loo/ ,hun!er- is mentione% first an% then fear( An% Allah &resents an eGam&le6 a cit# which was safe an% secure$ its &ro ision comin! to it in abun%ance from e er# location$ but it %enie% the fa ors of Allah ( So Allah ma%e it taste the envelopment of hunger an% fear for what the# ha% been %oin!( [Nahl 166112] baasal al %oo'i wal khawf - Allah ma%e them taste hun!er$ an% then fear( )conomical con%itions are mentione% first in this surah Nahl$ an% then fear(
