The easiest way to test vocabulary is using multiple!choice questions.

Scoring.
Be clear about what each item is testing. Award points for that only. Nothing should be deducted from non!grammatical errors. If two elements are being tested in an item, then points may be assigned to each of them.

Specication of content should be straightforward. Identify what structures are being taught in textbooks. Assumed knowledge should identied as well.

S A M P L I N G! Selecting widely from the structures specied. Identify the most important structures. It should not deliberately concentrate on the structures which happen to be easiest to test.

WRITING ITEMS Why? Because of distractors. Techniques: require the students to supply grammatical structures appropriately and not simply recognize their correct use. Paraphrase, completion, modied close.
