Problems
1. A Steam power station has an overall efficiency of 20% and 0.6 kg of coal is burnt per kWh of electrical energy generated Calculate the calorific value of fuel? Sol: Let x-be the calorific value of the fuel (Kcal/kg) Heat produced by 0.6kg of coal = 0.6 x kcal Heat equivalent of 1 kWh = 860 kcal

Overall efficiency = overall = 0.2 = x=

2.The Overall efficiency of a thermal station is 30%. The calorific value of the coal used is 6800 Kcal/kg find the consumption of coal per unit? Sol: Overall efficiency Calorific value Energy output Energy output Efficiency () = = 30% = 6800Kcal/kg = 1 kWh=860kcal = Coal consumption x Calorific value = Coal consumption x 6800
