Elliott Riches Knowles v. Iowa 525 U.S. 113 (1998) History: Knowles was charged with possession of marijuana.

He moved to suppress the marijuana and his motion was denied. He appealed and the Iowa Supreme Court affirmed. The U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari and reversed. Facts: Knowles was stopped after a police officer clocked him going 43 in a 25 mph zone. The police officer gave Knowles a ticket and then performed a search of the car. He found a pot pipe and a bag of marijuana. He arrested Knowles and transported him to the nearest police station. Issue: Was searching the vehicle after giving a ticket reasonable? Holding: No Opinion: The court gives two reasons to search suspects after arrest. The first is to protect officer safety and second to preserve evidence for later use at trial. The court said that the state hasnt shown any reason why the search was necessary. Once the citation had been issued there was not going to be any other evidence of speeding in the car. The court therefore concluded that the search was unreasonable and reversed the judgment of the Iowa Supreme Court. REVERSED
