Looking at texts differently

• We need to look at texts DIFFERENTLY

• We need to look at texts as

CONSTRUCTIONS
• Writers construct their texts just like
engineers and builders, using specific
tools and resources at specific points
to have specific effects
Language Devices
• Bricks- Words
• Frame- Structure of text
This is an extract from a NEWSLETTER written by the

HEADTEACHER of a school and sent to PARENTS.

• Which of the following shapes BEST SHOWS HOW the writer has
used repetition in order to show that everybody in his school is
working together?
Welcome to this special edition of PARENT POST
where we present the framework for becoming a
Specialist School for Science.
Becoming a specialist school is an important strategic
development for us and one in which we want our
bid to be successful in its first submission.
To enable this we have to demonstrate the capacity
to meet with the expectations set out.

Although the bid is on behalf of this particular school

there are many dimensions to it which will realise
the emerging vision of how schools within a
community - and working with a number of partners
- can come together to promote education and raise
standards. This has always been the goal at this
school but the extra resourcing for Specialist
Schools will ensure we can pursue this agenda in a
much more structured way.
