ACTS III and IV

Thematic Connections: ACT III 1. Explain how the theme Justice vs. Retribution and Revenge is revealed in Act III. Include three quotes relating to the theme. Make sure you include both retribution and justice.

2. Explain how the theme of hysteria is extended upon during Act III. Include two relevant quotes exemplifying this theme.

ACT IV 3. Community: Unity and Exclusion- Who is a part of the community of Salem? Who is excluded? How and why does the trial change the typical order of the community? What happens to the community when the order is changed? Connect these ideas to the town of Kinder and Kinder High school. Who is included in the community of our school? Who is included in the town of Kinder? What exclusions are present in both? (One paragraph in length)

4. Order vs. Individual Freedom- Why did the Puritans come to America? What level of individual freedom do you see in Salem? What level of order? What happens when one or the other gets out of balance? When does order become autocratic? What is the balance between individual freedom and order in your school or community?

Character Development: 5. List the dynamic characters in Act III and Act IV. Explain the change. (2)

6. Explain the conflicts that the protagonist John Proctor faces throughout the play. (Man vs. Man, Man vs. Self, and so on.)
