Department of Civil Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur CE 462A Hydraulic and Hydrologic Design (2013-14-II) Home Work-3

Note: There are two questions in this home work and a total of three pages. Q-1: You are to design the storm water drainage for the watershed shown in Figure 1. Use the Rational Method to find the peak discharges into each inlet (1, 2, and 3) and the required discharge carrying capacity for each pipe segment (1-2, 2-3, and 2-3). Use a 50-yr return period and the IDF curves presented in Figure-2. Lengths of the concrete pipes 1-2 and 2-3 are 150 m and 180 m, respectively, and the distance between the inlet 3 and the river is 2 km.

Figure 2: IDF curve to be used for Q-1 Q-2: An eight-lane divided highway is to be laid at longitudinal and transverse slopes of 1.5% and 2.5%, respectively. The highway, to be constructed of bitumen-asphalt smooth finish in the vicinity of Bhopal, is to have a width of a single lane as 3 m. Determine the spacing between two consecutive inlets to be provided on either side of the highway for the following cases: (a) grate inlet of size 0.6 m wide X 1.0 long with a splash over velocity of 2.5 m/s, (b) curb opening inlet of a maximum height of 6-inches, and (c) a combination inlet of grate of size 0.6 m X 0.6 m with a splash over velocity of 2.0 m/s and a curb-opening inlet of a maximum height of 6-inches. Assume the following design parameters: Runoff coefficient (C) in Rational formula = 0.95 (if your roll number is even)

= 0.90 (if your roll number odd) Permissible spread (Tmax) on highway Depression of gutter (a) in a width W=1.0 m = 2.00 (if your roll number is even) = 3.00 (if your roll number odd) = 60 mm (if your roll number is even) = 75 mm (if your roll number is odd)

In case you feel the need of any additional data for design, you may assume a reasonable value but dont forget to mention the same. For all the three types of inlet options, provide the design details (plan elevation, and side views of major elements) in orthographic projections on a drawing sheet.
