Patankar serlesi in computa‘ ational (FN methods in mechanics and thermal sciences SZ Numerical Heat _ Transfer and Fiuid | FIOW Patankar | Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Here is a self-contained, straightforward treatment of the practical details involved in computational activity for numerical heat transfer and fluid flow analysis. Intended as an introduction to the field, the book emphasizes physical significance rather than mathematical manipulation. Most of the mathematics used throughout are limited to simple algebra. The book carries the description of the numerical method to the point where readers can begin to write computer pro- grams. Preparation and testing of such pro- grams are thoroughly described. Beginning with consideration of heat conduction, the author discusses the inter- action of convection and conduction lead- ing to analysis of the procedure for fluid- flow calculation. Problems ending some chapters are designed to aid understanding, while illus- trative applications spotlight solution of practical challenges, ‘These applications include: developing flow in a curved pipe; combined convection in a horizontal tube; melting around a ver- tical pipe; turbulent flow and heat transfer in internally finned tubes; a deflected tur- bulent jet; a hypermixing jet within a thrust-augmenting ejector; a periodic fully developed duct flow; and thermal-hydraulic analysis of a steam generator. (Continued on inside back flap) (Continued from inside front flap) In addition, special topics are discussed, including: two-dimensional parabolic flow; three-dimensional parabolic flow; partially parabolic flows; and the finite-element method. The book is an important reference for engineering practitioners, and is extremely useful as a text in courses dealing with computation of fluid flow and heat transfer. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Suhas V. Patankar is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, He obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in India, and received his Ph.D. from the Imperial College, London. Before joining the University of Minne- sota faculty, Dr. Patankar held positions at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur; the Imperial College, London; and the University of Waterloo, Canada. He has been active in the development of numerical methods and computer pro- grams for practical situations involving fluid flow and heat transfer.
