Meagan OToole EDUC 359- Intro into ELL Reflection I really enjoyed the exercise that we did last

class. I definitely learned a lot by doing this on my own and in person instead of writing about what I could do. I learned different approaches that I could take as a teacher to help students learn the meaning and sounds of different words in the English language. The most important thing that I learned coming out of this exercise was to not directly tell the student a definition right out of the gate. As teachers, we should let them try and figure out the meaning for themselves as we model the definition. This allows them to figure out an understanding and a definition that works best for them. I also learned that the best way to teach a word to a student is to try to relate the word to them. For example, when teaching Jack the word intend I asked him questions about what he did when he got home from school and he told me about his Xbox and I used that in my mini lesson. I think that this was when he started to get the grip on the definition and how to use the word. I am more of a kinesthetic learner so actually doing this activity myself was a very good experience for me and I learned a lot.
