Activity I

Spencer Belanger, Social Studies 30-1, Block 2

1. It would seem that throughout not only todays society but also the historical societies of our past, there are differing beliefs and values over the construct and the complexion of human nature. Such examples of the different theories are exemplified through the literary works of Aldous Huxley and George Orwell; both 1984 and Brave New World demonstrate viewpoints of negativity towards the future of society and the destruction of individuality. These authors believe that the nature of society could eventually lead humanity to the extremes that are demonstrated in their literary works.

2. Individualism depicts the importance of the identity, independence, and freedom of an individual, rather than as a collective group or society, while collectivism mainly portrays the importance of a group as a whole, rather than the individuality of each person in it. With individualism, the stability and unity of a group can be extinguished because of the main focus on each individual, where with Collectivism, the importance and individuality of each person is diminished and the general emphasis is on the group in its entirety.
