Middle Childhood

Physical Development
Child can skip fluidly (Berk, 2013). Child has an increased ability to catch smaller balls that have been thrown at a greater distance (Berk, 2013).

Cognitive Development
The child is capable of more logical thinking about concrete information (Berk, 2013). The child has gained more applicable spatial thinking and can give well-defined directions (Berk, 2013).

Language Development
Children have the ability to segment syllables and blend and manipulate sounds in words (Turnbull & Justice, 2012). Uses stress and emphasis in words to express their intent (Turnbull & Justice, 2012).

Moral Reasoning
During this time the child starts to adopt the norms of good conduct and pro-social ideals (Berk, 2013). Starts to understand mutuality in relationships (Berk, 2013).

Signs of atypical development


If it is unlikely that the child will go to others for social interactions (Help Guide, n.d.). The child comes across as detached and prefers to be alone (Help Guide, n.d.).

Strategies for parents to influence development


Sign your child up for an organized sport. Take them to the library for summer reading programs.
