What is this place?

Welcome to the Haus der Astronomie, also known as the House of Astronomy! It is Heidelbergs Center for Astronomy Education and Outreach and inside this brochure is a collection of important and interesting information to get you started on your way.

One of the most prominent features of the Haus der Astronomie is the modern galaxy shaped building which was built in 2011. This new building contains a variety of learning tools and allows for a number of functions. The large lecture theatre is called the Klaus Tschira Auditorium and seats up to 100 people and can reserved by businesses. This is the essential hub of all action where all guest lecturers come to present their work. Within the auditorium is a digital planetarium and on the right you can see the famous building. The Haus der Astronomie is located on top of the Knigstuhl, the highest peak in the Odenwald Mountains, and is within the Lower Odenwald forest in Heidelberg. The peak is measured to be 567m high and allows for scenic views of both the River Necker and the Rhine Valley. If you visit the Haus der Astronomie we suggest you bring a pair of binoculars and a good camera to take advantage of the surrounding scenic beauty. So take advantage of what is to offer and visit today!

The institution was founded in 2008 by two organisation. One is Germanys most famous and largest basic research organisation, the Max Planck Society for Advancement of Science. The other is the Klaus Tschira Foundation. The aims of the organisation are to popularise science among the masses by teaching the public about astronomy and astrophysics. To aid us in our goal we allow the general public and groups make bookings and see what is here. We also run a summer school and supply the science community with teaching materials.

This is what our famous galaxy shaped building looks like.
