Quick Start Guide

For additional information, see the tutorials that come with WinZip, the WinZip Help file, and visit the WinZip web site at http: www.win!ip.com. What i& an #rchi'e or Zip (i$e, any*ay+ Zip files are "archives" used for storing and distributing files, and can contain one or more files. #suall$ the files "archived" in a Zip are compressed to save space. Zip files are often used to: ,i&tri)ute (i$e& on the !nternet- %nl$ one Zip file transfer operation &download' is re(uired to obtain all related files and file transfer is (uicker because the archived files are compressed. Send a group o( re$ated (i$e& to an a&&ociate- When $ou distribute the collection of files as an archive $ou benefit from the file grouping and compression as well. Sa'e di&k &pace- )f $ou have large files that are important but seldom used, such as large data files, simpl$ compress these files into an archive and then un!ip &or "e*tract"' them onl$ when needed.

What doe& WinZip do+ WinZip makes it eas$ for Windows users to work with archives. WinZip features an intuitive point+and+click drag+and+drop interface for viewing, running, e*tracting, adding, and deleting files in archives with a standard Windows interface, and also provides a Wi!ard interface that further simplifies the process of working with Zip files. #)out WinZip.& Setup /ption& ,uring the WinZip setup procedure $ou are asked to select either the WinZip

Wi!ard interface or the WinZip -lassic interface. WinZip Wi0ard- )f $ou are new to computers, or unfamiliar with the Windows operating s$stem, then $ou should first tr$ using the WinZip Wi!ard to open and create $our Zip files. WinZip C$a&&ic- The more powerful WinZip -lassic interface is recommended if $ou are an e*perienced computer user, comfortable with using Windows and Zip files.

)n the following section we will describe the WinZip Wi!ard .etup screens. With either interface, the setup panels provide information about the options offered. Whichever setup option $ou choose, $ou can easil$ switch between the two interfaces at an$ time with a single click, and $ou can alwa$s change the default settings later. ./0 !n&ta$$ing the WinZip Wi0ard We will refer to the on+screen panels using the title that appears at the top of each panel. 1. )n the WinZip .etup panel, select ".tart with the WinZip Wi!ard" and click "2e*t". The .earch for Favorite Zip Folders panel will appear. 3. )n the .earch for Favorite Zip Folders panel, select ".earch 4ntire Hard ,isk" so the Wi!ard can search $our s$stem for Zip files &this is the recommended option'. 5ou will see the search progress, and then a panel that sa$s something like "16 folders were added to $our 7Favorite Zip Folders7". -lick "2e*t". 8. The Wi!ard will open an 4*plorer window displa$ing the WinZip program group icons. -lick "2e*t" to continue, and the Wi!ard Welcome panel will appear. 9. )n the Wi!ard Welcome panel, click "2e*t" again, and the .elect :ctivit$ panel will appear. That7s it, $ou have installed WinZip, and $ou7re read$ to begin using the WinZip Wi!ard. The sections below describe using the Wi!ard for un!ipping and !ipping files. 1&ing the WinZip Wi0ard )f $ou have ;ust installed WinZip and selected the WinZip Wi!ard interface, then at this point the .elect :ctivit$ panel is on the screen.

)f $ou have previousl$ installed WinZip, $ou can start a WinZip session using the WinZip program item in the WinZip program group, the .tart menu, or the WinZip icon on $our desktop. Here is a brief introduction to the features of the WinZip Wi!ard. Quick 1n0ipping *ith the WinZip Wi0ard 1. )n the .elect :ctivit$ panel, select "#n!ip or install from an e*isting Zip file" and click "2e*t". The .elect Zip File panel will appear. 3. )n the .elect Zip File panel, click on the Zip file $ou want to work with and click "2e*t". The #n!ip panel will appear. 8. )n the #n!ip panel, click "#n!ip 2ow" to open the files in the archive. The WinZip Wi!ard will open a Windows 4*plorer window showing the un!ipped files. That7s it, $ou7ve ;ust un!ipped &e*tracted' a Zip file using the WinZip Wi!ard. 5ou can now work with the un!ipped files, or click "2e*t" to select another activit$ within WinZip, or close the WinZip Wi!ard window. Quick Zipping *ith the WinZip Wi0ard 1. )n the .elect :ctivit$ panel, select "-reate a new Zip file" and click "2e*t". 3. )n the -hoose Zip 2ame panel, t$pe the name $ou want to use for $our new Zip file and click "2e*t". For e*ample, if $ou are creating a Zip file that will contain some files related to $earl$ reports, $ou might t$pe "1<<< reports" as the name for $our Zip file. 8. )n the .elect Files panel, click ":dd files" to add files to $our Zip file, then select the files $ou want to add and click "%=". 9. -lick "Zip 2ow" to create the new Zip file. That7s it, $ou7ve ;ust created a Zip file using the WinZip Wi!ard. 5ou can now click the "WinZip -lassic" button if $ou would like to e*amine the contents of $our new archive, or click "2e*t" to select another activit$ within WinZip, or close the WinZip Wi!ard window. ./0 1&ing WinZip C$a&&ic Here is a brief introduction to some of the features of WinZip -lassic. 1. )n the WinZip Window click the "%pen" toolbar button, or select %pen :rchive from the File menu. The %pen :rchive dialog bo* will appear. 3. )n the %pen :rchive dialog bo* $ou can locate the archive $ou want to un!ip. Then click "%pen". The contents of the archive will be displa$ed in the WinZip window. 8. To 4*tract files from the archive click the "4*tract" toolbar button, or select 4*tract> from the :ctions menu. The 4*tract dialog bo* will appear. 9. )n the bo* labeled "4*tract to:" choose the folder where $ou want to place the e*tracted files and click "4*tract". That7s it, $ou have e*tracted the contents of the archive to the chosen director$. 5ou can now work with the e*tracted files, or select another activit$ within WinZip, or close the WinZip window. Note: 5ou can also e*tract files from an archive in the WinZip -lassic window b$ dragging them to the desired folder in Windows 4*plorer or to the desktop. Quick Zipping *ith WinZip C$a&&ic 1. )n the WinZip Window click the "2ew" toolbar button, or select 2ew :rchive from the File menu. The 2ew :rchive dialog bo* will appear. 3. )n the 2ew :rchive dialog bo* $ou can specif$ the location where $ou want to create the archive, and t$pe the name $ou want to use for $our new archive. Then click "%=". The :dd dialog bo* will appear. 8. )n the :dd dialog bo* select the files that $ou want to add to $our new archive and click ":dd". That7s it, $ou have created a new archive. 5ou can now e*amine the contents of $our new archive, or select another activit$ within WinZip, or close the WinZip window. Note: 5ou can also add files to an archive b$ dragging the files from ?$ -omputer or the Windows 4*plorer and dropping the files on the WinZip window. WinZip C$a&&ic and Wi0ard- S*itching !nter(ace& 5ou can easil$ switch between the WinZip Wi!ard and WinZip -lassic )nterfaces with a single mouse click. Here7s how: !n WinZip Wi0ard click the "WinZip -lassic" button at the lower left part of the

Zip and 1n0ip 3i$e& *ithout 4ea'ing the 56p$orer 2o create an archi'e: $ou can select file&s' in the Windows 4*plorer, right click, select WinZip, and then select ":dd to Zip file" from the submenu menu that appears. 2o e6tract (i$e& (ro an archi'e- $ou can select the archive in Windows 4*plorer, and either: right click, select WinZip and then select "4*tract to..." from the submenu menu that appears, or right click and drag the archive onto the folder where $ou want it e*tracted, and then select an e*tract option from the conte*t menu that appears.
