Margaux Deutsch January 30, 2014

Early Literacy Component: Every week, well be working on a component of early literacy. This week, well be focusing on the background knowledge portion, particularly narrative skills. This affects your childs ability to speak in full sentences, and verbally share stories, share ideas and solve problems (Ghoting 4).

Opening Ritual
Song:
Hello My Friends (Maddigan 158) (To the Tune of Farmer in the Dell) Hello my friends hello, Hello my friends hello, Hello my friends, Hello my friends, Hello my friends hello!

Stretch:
Stretch, Stretch, Stretch (Maddigan 124) (To the tune of Row, Row, Row your Boat) Stretch, stretch, stretch your arms, High above your head. Stretch so high, Reach the sky, And then well stretch again. Stretch, stretch, stretch your arms, High above your head. Stretch so high, Reach the sky, And bring them down again.

Repeat verses and motions, counting down with fingers: Four ripe apples Three ripe apples Two ripe apples One last apple up in a tree, It looked down and frowned at me, So I twisted that apple as hard as I could, Eeww! It was rotten! Thats no good!

Empowering Literacy Tip:

Im sure youve noticed that children like to imitate you. They will also imitate your tone of voice. When you read a book, you may keep your childs interest longer when you change your voice from time to time-- loud/soft, high/low, fast/slow.

Closing Ritual
Closing Fingerplay:
Stretching (Maddigan 230) (To the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star) Everybody reach up high, To the stars up in the sky. Swaying left and swaying right, Blinking in the sky at night. Everybody reach up high, To the stars up in the sky.

Closing Song:
Goodbye Everyone (Maddigan 63) (To the tune of Where is Thumbkin) Goodbye everyone. Goodbye everyone. Now were done. Now were done. Come again next week. Come again next week. Well have fun. Well have fun.
