Sheet (5) Motor Braking 1. A 400V shunt motor draws 30A while supplying the rated load at a speed of 100rad/s. the armature resistance is 1.0 and the field winding resistance is 200. Determine the external resistance that must be inserted in series with the armature circuit so that the armature current does not exceed 150% of its rated value when the motor is plugged. Determine the braking torque : a) At the instant of plugging b) When the motor is approaching zero speed.

2.

A 400V, 600rpm, 20-hp shunt motor is operating at full load. The efficiency of the motor is 80%. The armature resistance is 0.4 and the field winding resistance is 200. Determine: a) The external resistance that must be inserted in series with the armature circuit so that the armature current does not exceed twice the full load current when the motor is plugged. b) The maximum braking torque c) The braking torque and the armature current when the motor speed is approaching zero. Repeat the above problem if the motor is to be stopped using dynamic braking.
