CHRISTIANITY & THE DEATH PENALTY

Where do our Churches stand?

Supporters of the death penalty often regard Christianity as their reason for doing so. Yet an overwhelming number of mainline denominations are publicly condemning the death penalty using such strong words as immoral, unjust, degrading, brutalizing discriminatory, and vengeful. Their witness is strong, coming from a diversity of churches such as American Baptists, Disciples of Christ, Episcopal, Mennonite, Catholic, United Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, and United Methodist.

And Jesus?
How often we hear the death penalty supported by quoting Jesus as saying, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Wrong. Jesus is quoting what others sometimes say, then he continues: But I say to you Jesus is insisting that all our decisions be rooted in love even to the point of turning the other cheek. (Matthew 5:38-39)

Therefore
Putting aside such important matters as potential innocence and arbitrariness, the bottom line for Christians would seem to be this: to execute the criminal is to cut short the opportunity for the Holy Spirit to bring repentance and restitution. Life without parole is sufficient to keep society safe, while keeping the door open for the power of God to change persons. The conversion of the apostle Paul is a witness to Gods power to transform those guilty of the worst crime into instruments of love and peace.
