CNT 3004 Spring 2014 Assignment # 1

1A) The range would be 89.8 and 90.0. B) 20 total minus the 7 already mentioned in the question = 13 additional radio stations. C) Noiseless channel formula Nyquist bit rate: 2 x 200, 000 Hz x Log (2) (8) = 1,200 000 bps.

2A) Bandwidth at the sender = 40 5 = 35 KHz B) 4 harmonics reach the receiver because all the harmonics less than or equal to 20 KHz are lost due to the negative infinity attenuation. C) Bandwidth at the receiver = 40 KHz 20 KHz = 20 KHz. D) Only 4 harmonics reach the receiver with the following maximum powers: 20 mW 10 mW 5 mW 2.5 mW

A) 10 x (10-1) / 2 = 45 cables are needed for 10 devices in the Mesh network. B) Shannon Formula: 8000 x Log (2) (1 + 31) = 40,000 bps = 40 Kbps C) 100 Kbps * 100 ms = 100,000 bps * 0.1 s = 10,000 bps or 10 Kbps can fill the link at a time.

4A) Bandwidth = 6250 Hz 0 Hz = 6250 Hz 2 x 6250 Hz x 8 bits = 100,000 bps = 100 Kbps B) The power of the signal would be approximately 25.06 milliwatts at the receivers side because the signal has attenuated a total of -3 dB by the time it reaches the receiver which is about 50% of the initial power of the signal. (-1.5) + (-1.5) = -3 dB Verification: 10 Log10 (25.06/50) = -3dB C) 1000 packets x 0.01 s = 10 packets therefore the minimum amount of packets that can be lost due to the link failure is 1 packet and the maximum is 11 packets. In the case of the question, I believe the minimum amount that could be lost would be 10 packets because the device has been transmitting for a relatively long time so the wire is already full. The reason we would lose a maximum of 11 packets is because if one of the 10 packets is being partially received and another new one is being partially inserted in the wire, the loss of the link would cause both of them plus the 9 still in the wire to be discarded.
