Main Idea Flocabulary Lyrics

Alright, class. I know youre ready for the weekend. (Ya!) Dont forget about your fivepage paper. (No!) Make sure that you express your main idea and back it up. Listen up, Lend me an ear, The hot new thing is the main idea. Supported by the details to keep it all clear, The main ideas the reason that were all here. Yeah, come on. Have you ever read something and when you got to the end, You didn't get the point, nope, you didn't understand? Well let me break it down for the next time you read, Theres gonna be three basic things youll see: The subject, main idea and the details, Sort of like a city, the house, the people. Subject is the broad thing that its about, The main idea? (Whats that now?) Its the main thing the writer wants to say, Its the central point. You get it? OK? You can often find it in the first couple lines, But it could be anywhere, so go find it. Its supported by specific details, The facts in the sentences, be real They should add up to make the main idea, kid,

They form up like cheerleaders in a pyramid. Like I just read an article called Bear Facts, And it talked about how they could be brown or black, Polar or grizzly or another type, They're all good hunters and they know how to fight. Cause they have big paws so they can catch fish, And big sharp teeth that they eat with. And if they wanna climb a tree to find something to eat, Their super sharp claws are all that they need. See? Now lets break it down, I mean lets dig deeper in the article I found. What's the subject? (Bears!) And what would be the main idea they had there? (That bears are good hunters. That's most important!) And how about the details they had to support it? (They have large teeth, paws and claws!) And that's how you know hunting is a bears job. Listen up, Lend me an ear, The hot new thing is the main idea. Supported by the details to keep it all clear, The main ideas the reason that were all here. Yeah, come on.

I just read a story about a boy named Ben On the first day of school (Well what happened then?) Ben clutched his new backpack and walked in With a big smile when he saw his old friends. Tried to play it cool when he saw his old crush, But when she was close, his mind turned to mush. He liked his art teacher, that class was real fun, Ben was so worked up that he could hardly eat lunch. Now what's the subject? (Bens first day of school!) And what's the main idea? What's the author wanna prove? (Bens first day of school was exciting!) And details to back that up? Where are they hiding? (When Ben saw his old friends he was psyched, And he was nervous around the girl that he liked!) He even had a backpack that was brand new Now I get the main idea. Can you?

Plot Elements/Plot Diagram Flocabulary Lyrics A plots not anything but a sequence of events. And every story has a plot, because a story without a plot is like a fish out of water! Or like pancakes without syrup. Or like a shoe without some laces! You wouldnt wear a shoe without laces, would you? Would you? You got a story to tell? You better have a plot! If it doesn't, am I listening? Um, no Im not First introduce the conflict and characters, Then the action rises, it may get scarier. The climax is when things go nuts, The action falls away, then we wrap it up. Yup, yup thats the conclusion, Make your plot hot and you're never losing. Lets take a second now to focus on plot, You wanna learn to tell a cool story or not? The beginning of the story is the introduction, We get to meet the characters, find out something About the main conflict, or main problems, Were dying to know how the characters will solve them. The conflict unravels in three phases: Rising action is the first stage, its The middle of the story where you build suspense, Whatever the problem is, it gets intense, Until the turning point hits, thats called the climax,

The character changes, accepts new facts, And may have to make a choice based on what happened, The tension decreases, thats the falling action. With the conflict resolved, you can wrap up loose ends, In the last section that we call the conclusion. Lets break down the plot of a story called The Date, With two characters who are not the same. In the introduction Joe says he's not popular, Thats an important fact about his character. The conflict? He wants to date a popular girl, Her name is Lisa and shes out of this world. She only dates jocks but he still makes the offer, When he asks Lisa out on a date to Red Lobster. She says yes and the plot thickens, The rising action adds a little tension. But then Joe is grossed out by the way she chews,

Its the climax, that information is new. Its a turning point for Joe and things change after, Their relationship ending is the falling action. So the resolution to this conflict Or conclusion is: Joe and Lisa didn't stick.

Prefixes Flocabulary Lyrics Prefixes! It's like a remix. It changes things, Like what a word means. You can find 'em at the front of a word. Learn 'em, you need 'em, To figure out words and their meanings. (x2) Prefixes are an important part, They tell you about a word, right from the start. When you see non- or un-, that means not, Like unintelligent or the word nonstop. It's a few more for not, that I'll hit you with, Il-, if you can't read, then you're illiterate. Inactive? No. Not moving, Impossible is something you cannot be doing. Irrational - you should have thought a bit, Dis- and de- mean opposite. If you disagree, well hey, that's cool, But your whole style gets devalued. The prefix anti- means against, You're antisocial if you don't have friends. Here comes the intermission, everybody sing, 'Cause inter- means between and the hook's here, see? Like... Prefixes! It's like a remix. It changes things, Like what a word means. You can find 'em at the front of a word.

Learn 'em, you need 'em, To figure out words and their meanings. (x2)

You may ask where they come from, Most are Greek or Latin, there's a whole bunch of 'em, Like macro- is large and micro- is small, Mono- is one. Are you hearin me, y'all? I could talk in a monotone on a telephone, And tele- goes the distance just like a telescope. If you kinda understand that's semi-, You'll halfway get it till you commit it to memory. Keep these in your mind's foreground, 'Cause fore- means front and you'll need 'em around. This song is over and I don't mean ending, It's overqualified, too much of a good thing. Prefixes! It's like a remix. It changes things, Like what a word means. You can find 'em at the front of a word. Learn 'em, you need 'em, To figure out words and their meanings. (x2)

Roots Flocabulary Lyrics So, the other day, Im hanging out with my friend Joe, and hes making fun of me because I dont know the roots of words. I didnt give it much thought, but then later on, the strangest thing happened. It was a cold night, and I was alone, Walking in my trench coat at the side of the road, When a man who I didnt know handed me a note, It was folded and written in a code of roots, Had to break down the code, so lets see, First I got a dictionary from my friend Lee. D-I-C-T, thats speak or say, Lee dictated, I didnt contradict, okay? Aut is self like autograph, its gotta be, But this note wasnt an autobiography. I kept reading and what did I see? Ped and pod which relate to feet. Thats what my podiatrist told me, I pedal past pedestrians who were trying impede me. Port is carry, you know the haps, I support the porter who carried my bags. You can transport a portable tv, That you import from Canada, BC. This note was still confusing, but I pressed on, If the haters think Im gonna stop, they guessed wrong. Tele means far, like television? No doubt, Or the telescope that I telephoned about.

Tell a medic Im telekinetic, or might be, But deciphering this note might take the life of me. Lets get back son, Back to the roots, Were linguistically digging for clues. Back to the origin, Back to the roots, Its all connected, lets find the truth. Let me get specific, take a closer look, Spec means look, thats what it says in my book. I inspected the note, and I had to respect It was a fine specimen in one aspect. The shape or form was uniform and uh, I still had to figure out the formula. I was running out of time like the tempo, I asked my contemporaries, I guess they didnt get the memo. I didnt want this mystery to turn tragic, I had to write out the clues, had to graph it. Graph is written, like my autograph, Or written by light like a photograph. Photo is light, yeah but hold on, Opened the shutter, I captured a couple photons, I transmitted the photo via text, Mit or Miss means send, yeah, you guessed. My commitment to this mission was intermittent at best, I must admit that the whole was leaving me

stressed. Meter means measure, my thermometer Measured my temperature, and it was off the register. I prayed to the stars, thats aster, Astronauts blast off, asteroids move faster, Just then phono a sound, Like a symphony, or was a phonograph around? It was the guy from before who had given me the note, His mustache was thick, his glasses low. I said this is the fin the end, I must know, Finally define this, Im at the end of my rope. The finale came quickly, it wasnt slow, He took off his glasses, lo and behold. It was my friend Joe, who was playing a prank, In his own nerdy way, yeah, Joe, thanks.

Suffixes Flocabulary Lyrics Listen up, I don't know if you heard, But if you have a need for the meaning of a word, Just take a look and check at the end; If a suffix is there then that'll be your friend. Like -able or -ible, it's able to be done, If it's visible its able to be seen like the sun. I'm capable of having fun but now I gotta run to '-A-L', -al is another one. That means it relates to the root word, Like natural is all about nature; observe How the suffix, -en means made of whatever, Wooden is made out of wood, now thats clever. I dig golden nuggets like a miner, cause -er or -or means one who does. A baker, no doubt, thats the one who bakes, What about the suffix -ful? Lets get it straight. Of course it means full of, I hope that's helpful, I mean full of help with this lesson we dealt you. What about -ous O-U-S? That also means full of; theres no need to guess. Like someone who's gracious is full of grace, If youre feeling nervous, you might wanna meditate. If it ends with -y that means it tends to be, You tend to feel good when youre cheery,

so cheer for me. Suffixes, these are the suffixes At the end of a word, they tell you what it is. If you need the meaning of a word, you can trust: If you look at the end, you can tell by the suffix. Yeah, you see all you've got to do is look at the end. Now hold up, here are some more, right: Theres verse two cause there's still a few suffixes left, Like -ion, -tion & -sion, now they represent The act, result or state of something done, Like if it's cancelled you get a cancellation. If it's contagious then it's a contagion, So you need to vacate go on a vacation. Okay, I'm not trying to be exhaustive, The -ive suffix means wait, I lost it. Oh yeah, it means tending to, Like abusive tends to create abuse. Next is -less and it means without, Without care is careless, thats not what Im about. We stay peerless, fearless, The flow is Van Gogh, but I will never be earless. Cant keep running fast 'cause now I'm all spent, Guess I should have taken another supplement. The -ment suffix is the result or act of, If its in containment, its the result of being packed up.

Make an amendment, keep adding, dont rest, Im never living in a state of carelessness. -ness means the state of; my restlessness Is probably cause I'm studying for this suffix test. Don't forget -ward, thats the direction of, Forward never backward, we gotta keep stepping up! That aint all the suffixes, either; thats just the most popular ones. Suffixes, these are the suffixes At the end of a word, they tell you what it is. If you need the meaning of a word, you can trust: If you look at the end, you can tell by the suffix.

Evaluate Sources Flocabulary Lyrics You know, the best part about the internet is that nobody knows youre a fish. Not every word that you read online Is true, some sites contain lies. Figure out which sites you can trust, Just follow the plan and come with us. Some types of sites are more often true, Check the domain suffix for a clue. From the federal government, lets see, Get good facts dot g-o-v. Info from schools is often true, Educational sites dot e-d-u. A non-profit group is good most times, see, Online dot o-r-g. But do you sense bias or opinion? Try to figure why the post was written, And dont trust sites with kittens. Im just kidding, we stay winning. Can I trust it? (Yes you can!) If the source is verified, follow the plan. Can I trust it? (No you cant!) If its some random blog or an angry rant. So now youre on a page, dot com, whatever, Follow these steps to evaluate it better. Who wrote the article? An expert or professor? Or some random blogger named Flonng Flezzzler? Are they writing for a publication? If so, Is it a major one where they verify the info? Or is it a site where gossip spreads?

News alert: Beyonce kicks giraffe in the head! When was it written? Has it been a minute?

Are there new facts that the article is missing? If it was written when disco was popping, Theres probably something more recent on your topic. Is there bias? Does it lean right or left? Iz tha tone so in4ML dat it sounds like a text? Iz it misppellled and tha grammar iz a mess? If yes, then its on to the next. Can the information be verified? Does the author cite sources in her lines? 32% of facts are made up That fact I made up, dont cite it, wait up. Beware of Wikipedia, anyone can edit, But some lines cite sources, so check it. You need to see where the info comes from, And dont cite satire sites like The Onion. Can I trust it? (Yes you can!) If the source is verified, follow the plan. Can I trust it? (No you cant!) If its some random blog or an angry rant.

Fiction and Nonfiction Flocabulary Lyrics

Welcome to the library. Go ahead and take a seat and get comfortable. Ive got a story for you. Once upon a time there was an author, Who wrote lots of books and had much to offer. She wrote both types, fiction and nonfiction. You dont know the difference? Well, come on, listen. Fiction is made up, its false, not true, Its make-believe that means there is not proof. Now, it can sound true, It can even have facts, But its from the imagination well leave it at that. Now nonfiction is based on facts and True things that have really happened. Its informative, full of information, Nonfiction can help you with your education. Our author loved both, as you can tell, She wrote a nonfiction book about the liberty bell, And then wrote a story about living on the moon, Which is fiction for now, but who knows? Maybe soon... Let me tell you a story, Yup, Imma tell you a tale, Something thats nonfiction, And that means that its real.

Now you tell me a story, It doesn't have to be true, Yeah it can be fiction, And the author is you! One day the author picked up a pen, And started writing a story... Hmm, where to begin? Should it be fiction? A story? A tale? Or nonfiction? Something that is real? A tiger who could talk what would that be? (Fiction!) The life story of an athlete? (Nonfiction!) A book about snakes and what they eat? (Nonfiction!) A tale of a polar bear that could make beats? (Fiction!) The story of the first man in space? (Nonfiction!) But Harry Potter and that Hogwarts place is...? (Fiction!) Now you get the point, I think you understand, A book about the pyramids sitting in the sand, Or any other book that is all about facts, Is nonfiction, no doubt about that. But a book that tells a story like Winnie-thePooh, That isnt true. Thats fiction, yep, but you already knew! Let me tell you a story,

Yup, Imma tell you a tale, Something thats nonfiction, And that means that its real. Now you tell me a story, It doesn't have to be true, Yeah it can be fiction, And the author is you! Alright well, thank you, everybody, for coming out to the library and listening to my story. I hope everybody out there is inspired to write a little story of your own, whether its fiction or nonfiction, now that you know the difference. So go ahead and pick up a pen, a pencil, a keyboard, whatever you use. And write something!

Figurative Language Flocabulary Lyrics Meet Will, a youngin' with an old soul, An emcee who wants to be the next to blow. Imagine: hes in a dark room in Manhattan, Scrapping, scribbling on napkins, Trying to make a living off rapping, But skills, he lacked them. Nobody thought that it would happen, Until one day, Will switches his style, Gets deep, and his wordplay gets witty and wild. He used to sound so embarrassing, Now peep all the metaphors and comparisons. His life is a highway, but hed confess, He has a plan but needs a GPS. Hes using references and allusions, A lyrical Houdini, creating illusions. Dolphins in '72 - he won't lose, Up by the first alarm, hes not snoozing. You'll be amazed by every phrase, He will come correct with the wordplay. Literal lines that block his way, He will come correct with the wordplay. (x2) Comparing with like or as, he's dropping similes, Taking little steps like a centipede. He's sharp like a laser, sharp as a razor, In a night as dark as Darth Vader. Dude can juke and adjust his position, Contrasting two things in juxtaposition, From weak to made, cheap to paid, A creep to a dude who leads the way. Using personification, whats he doing?

Making objects and animals seem human. The moon smiles as the city breathes, He can feel the heartbeat of the city streets. A live show? You really oughta see it. Will will drop some onomatopoeia, Words that sound like what they describe, Now the crowd's buzzing - its alive. You'll be amazed by every phrase, He will come correct with the wordplay. Literal lines that block his way, He will come correct with the wordplay. (x2) Will he exaggerate? Use hyperbole? Hes the best ever at it, so certainly. With assonance, vowel sounds hes repeating, He seems the least beat in any season. His fans are legion, all the boneheads who bring beef Leave with lots of lyrical lesions. Thats alliteration - same sound sentence, Its commonsense - hes calm with the confidence. Using irony, opposite meaning, His lines hit as soft as iron, believe him, Good with the puns and the wordplay, oh my, Going deep in double meanings like they were a coal mine. Will's skills are sick like ERs, you heard of this? Get hit and youll see stars like Copernicus. If you only have one chance to shine, You better get up, get out and go wild.

They say the devils in the details, So if you're making a beat, Never overlook the treble. I'll be selling this retail, Like Sally at the seashore selling seashells. Followers ride our coattails, We cut them off each week like toenails. Oh yeah, Flocab up on that, Crews who be chewing the fat, Talking bout this and bout that, Oh, now we up on the map. Whoa, hold your horses. You call me a chump cause Im serving verses? Yall know what the mouth of the horse is. Its the place where you hear it first kids. This is news for all you new crews, Keep your kids close like Kangaroos do. I could eat a horse, or an animal, So hungry I cant stand it though. You call me a chump cause Im serving verses?

Yall know what the mouth of the horse is. Its the place where you hear it first kids.

Inferencing Read Between the Lines Flocabulary Lyrics

When you go by your friends house to see if shes home, And the house is all dark, and you dont have your phone, Shes doesnt answer the knock. What could this be? She could be hiding in the dark, she could have moved to Greece, But those dont seem likely, so you take your best guess. Shes probably just not home, no need to stress. When you take your best guess, you infer, Whether you observe the clues or you read em in the words. You reach conclusions from details or evidence, Clues that you see in the real world or sentences. Like Jasmine was cranky, she had bags beneath her eyes, Her head was droopy, she was yawning all the time. You infer shes tired, didnt get a good nights sleep, Jasmines not a shepherd, but you think she needs to count sheep. She didnt tell you she was sleepy, she didnt have to say, Cause the clues were like a sign that she was wearing on her face.

I read between the lines What you dont say, When you tell me that youre coming my way. I read between the lines To infer the truth, Imma take my best guess with you. Its your birthday, and you are amped, But when you ask Jasmine to hang, she says she has plans. You glance in her backpack and... Ummm, hello! You see a flashlight and two bags of marshmallows. A little later you overhear your friend Samantha Ask Jasmine What time? but you dont catch the answer. And then she says I wont tell. Jasmine, have trust, And then she sees you looking over, and she starts to blush. So think it through, everything you observed, Read between the lines. What can you infer? Maybe Jasmines throwing a surprise party for you, The conversation that you overheard was a clue. And where could it be? You infer its at a campsite, Where you roast marshmallows and might need a flashlight. That night, your dad leads you where youve never been,

And suddenly Surprise! and yeah, its all your friends. I read between the lines What you dont say, When you tell me that youre coming my way. I read between the lines To infer the truth, Imma take my best guess with you.

Synonyms and Antonyms Flocabulary Lyrics Uh-huh...listen, Do you know about the synonyms? They say the same thing again and again, again. They use different words with the same meaning, They might appear in the twilight or evening. Don't be fearful, don't be scared, You should be happy and glad they're here. Their team is so large, I'm not lying, Big, and gigantic like a giant or a titan. Use synonyms when you're writing, Scribbling, scrawling, jotting, noting. They're hoping, they're wishing, praying, That you'll use them instead of saying The same thing with the same words. The same thing with the same words. Their names are printed in the thesaurus, So look around that book and explore it! Synonym, then it means the same, So many words, what's in name? Antonym, then it means the opposite, So many words that you have got to get. (x2) Uh-huh...look, Another group, they're known as antonyms, They're my enemy, nah we can't be friends. The don't mean the same thing, they mean the opposite, They pick it up when I'm dropping it. Whenever I feel good, they feel bad,

Whenever I'm permanent, they're just a fad. When they come around - I'm up, they're down, I'm flying though the sky, they're digging underground.

They're brilliant, when I feel stupid, They're useful, when I am useless. The far to my near, the slow to my fast, Bravery to my fear, the first to my last. Shoot, I guess day needs night, Synonyms need antonyms, they don't need to fight. So now you know about these groups, aight? You should use both of 'em when you write... right? Synonym, then it means the same, So many words, what's in name? Antonym, then it means the opposite, So many words that you have got to get. (x2)

Test-Taking Vocabulary Flocabulary Lyrics Your honor, I'd like to cross-examine the witness. "Oh boy, here it comes. This guy." I have a few questions for you, sir. I think we're going to get to the bottom of what really happened. You accuse my client of stealing your car, Please describe everything you saw. Get specific with the details, don't be vague, "I saw Rod in my yard right around 8." And how did you identify or recognize Rod? Explain or tell me why, 'cause that seems odd. "Yeah, I could see his shirt, and I could see his hat," What color was his hat? "I think it was black." So you took an educated guess, inferred, That Rod was the person you observed? "Yeah," Well let's develop this line of thought, Say more about why you thought it was Rod. "I know Rod's a punk, with metal in his ear, Punks break the law, c'mon that's clear." So you're judging and evaluating my client, Based on his earrings and his personal style? Well, let me compare and contrast, Say how things are different or the same in fact: A good witness watches carefully,

Is he judging? Nah, just barely. A bad witness jumps to conclusions, Makes up his mind quickly, that's foolish. Just because Rod is a toughish guy, That doesn't explain why or justify your accusation. They've got me on a trial, For a crime I didn't do. I'm a witness to disaster, Tell me, do they know the truth? (x2) So, let's get back to the case, Just follow my directions, do what I say. Outline, summarize, quickly retell what happened. "I saw a guy in my yard, and then action: He smashed the Jeep window with a brick, I knew what would happen next, I could predict that He hot-wired my car, lickety-split, Put it in reverse and he drove off quick." You concluded it was Rod based on his tshirt? You came to that result from the facts that we heard? "Well it was sort of dark." Right. "And I don't see good, But he's the only punk kid I know in the neighborhood." The way you interpret or make sense of the facts Is insane, and everyone in this room knows that. The facts don't support your conclusion, They aren't evidence of what Rod's been

doing. I could analyze your story, break the parts down, But on that night, Rod was out of town. "He was?" He was at a punk festival in California, And I stole your car! Yeah, it was the lawyer! They've got me on a trial, For a crime I didn't do. I'm a witness to disaster, Tell me, do they know the truth? (x3)

I smelled coconuts and sunscreen lotion. I decided it was time to go for a swim, So I grabbed a snorkel and I dove in.
