Descriptive Language

We want our paragraphs to be persuasive! If we use descriptive language it will effectively engage our audience and will further support our arguments. In our persuasive writing we want to use bigger words or advanced/sophisticated use of language. The effective use of an adjective, which describes a noun (a person, place or thing), can improve our writing. BEFORE This is a good idea because AFTER This is a fascinating idea because Are there any other examples of another descriptive word that you can think of instead of good? Adverbs are another element of descriptive language that will also engage our readers. An adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb. In this case we can use an adverb to add more descriptions to our writing. BEFORE The seamstress fixed the childrens clothes. AFTER The seamstress quickly fixed the childrens clothes. Descriptive language uses images that appeal to the readers senses, helping the reader to imagine how a subject looks, sounds, smells, tastes, or feels. BEFORE I walked into his room and it smelled bad and kind of tasted funny. AFTER I walked into his room and the smell hit me like a brick wall. The mustiness of an unclean room wafted into my mouth, and there was nothing that could make me get rid of that taste.
