Water and Food Scarcity Shortages will cause political disputes between countries like Egypt and Ethiopia

which are both supplied by Nile. WATER Unequal distribution of water Lots of water with salt in and not enough energy to desalinate 2.8 billion experience water scarcity o 1.2 billion- physical scarcity o 1.6 billion- economic scarcity Poor most vulnerable as forced to live in bad land areas and pay the most for water in urban slums

Why is there physical scarcity? Climate change causes drought e.g. Sahel, change in rain patterns Population growth so more demand People migrate to drier areas so more vulnerable people Water needed for irrigation Growth of slums puts pressure on water in urban areas Densely populated areas have high demand for water Glaciers melting so no longer consistent water supply as melting too quickly e.g. Himalayas Aquifers get contaminated by sea water so less water

Why is there economic scarcity? FOOD Why is there physical scarcity? Climate change- inconsistency makes it harder for farmers o Higher temperature causing more pest and disease among crops o Change in rainfall causing flooding of crops and nutrients o Drought Land type- some areas not suitable for growing High levels of CO2 good to an extent Increase in biofuel growth so less for food crops Population growth means: o more demand for food o People forced to live on bad land Over 50% of world liv in urban areas so reliant on rural areas for food Bad infrastructure so cant collect water No money to access water

We have enough food in the world so its mainly economic scarcity as poorer countries arent receiving the food.
