BJ30A0600 Modelling of Unit Operations A. Solonen Some CSTR exercises 1. CSTR without reaction.

Consider an ideally stirred tank with volume 300l, which contains pure water. At time t = 0, a salt solution whose concentration is 0.1kg/l is started to be fed into the tank at rate 10l/min. Simultaneously, the salt mixture is led out of the tank with the same rate. How long does it take for the concentration to reach 99% of the feed concentration? 2. CSTR with reaction. Consider a CSTR reactor with volume 20l. At time t = 0, chemical A with concentration 2mol/l is fed in at rate 0.25l/min. A rst order elementary reaction A B happens in the reactor (no temperature dependency). Model how the concentration of A evolves in time, and t the model to data given in the le cstr_AtoB.dat (rst column is time, second column is A). Estimate the steady-state concentration of A. 3. CSTR with an exothermic reaction. Consider an exothermic reaction 2A + 4B ... The reaction is approximatively given by a second order kinetics: the reaction rate is R = kcA cB . The reaction was carried out in an adiabatic CSTR with volume VR = 110 106 m3 = 130 106 m3 /s. The inlet concentrations were A0 = 316.8mol/m3 , and with owrate V B 0 = 2A0, and we suppose the initial concentrations in the CSTR to be the same. The temperature of the inlet liquid was 25.2 C. Model the reaction and the temperature in the tank. Estimate the Arhenius parameters of the reaction, using only the measured reactor temperatures that are given in the data le cstr_heat.dat. The specic heat, density and reaction enthalpy are given by cP = 4.186 103 J/kgK, = 1000kg/m3 , H = 1004.3 103 J/mol, respectively.
