Hampton Script Takes the Win at BCCA


HAMPTON, Virginia -- (Feb. 13, 2013) This past weekend, staff members of The Hampton Script competed at the National HBCU Student News Media Conference and won an impressive seven awards. The contest, hosted by the Black College Communication Association (BCCA), was held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. The awards win range from first to third place: First Place 1. Best Headline Writing-Maulana Moore, editor-in-chief, The Chosen Won 2. Best Online Site, www.huscript.com Second Place 3. Best Student Newspaper (Non-Regular Production) Third Place 4. Best Sports Feature Story- Brandon Theo Dorsey III, Lady Pirates upend UMES Hawks 5. Signed Commentary or Column Writing- Caleb Jackson, staff writer 6. Best Online Video Story 7. Best Online Multimedia Package While the winners were filled with excitement about the awards they want to do better in following years. Staff writer, Caleb Jackson, said, We actually weren't as ecstatic as you would think. Third place is great, but it's not the final goal. I'll continue working hard and improving so that the Hampton Script as a whole can receive even more awards. It'll be even better if I can bring some more home in the process. Editor-in-Chief Maulana Moore was also excited about the competition but that this is only the beginning, saying, We will continue the legacy of a strong paper that continues to be the voice of HU.

The BCCA is a not-for-profit organization consisting of historically black colleges and universities with communications programs. The awards show the wealth of talent we have at HBCUs because the awards where spread among the schools, said the Valerie D. White, chairwoman of the Black College Communication Association.
