IN DEFENCE OF THE CREEK

PROLOGUE: Water is probably one of the most important resources we have. People can survive several weeks without food but we couldnt live for more than a week without water. Million liters of water are needed worldwide for everyday consumption. Despite our dependence on water, the irresponsible attitude of the public not thinking about how important water is use it as a dumping site for all sorts of waste. This lazy manner is a source of a big dilemma which causes vicious health problems that can eventually lead to death of people. This predicament causes great suffer to the entire earth, and this problem is called, Water Pollution. Water pollution is any contamination of water with chemicals or other foreign substances that are detrimental to human, plant, or animal health. These pollutants include fertilizers and pesticides from agricultural runoff; sewage and food processing waste; lead, mercury, and other heavy metals; chemical wastes from industrial discharges; and chemical contamination from hazardous waste sites. There are several threats to our water resources. And poor management of existing water resources can lead to scarcity in the long run. Therefore, we need to move, save and protect what is left for us. THE POEM:

IN DEFENCE OF THE CREEK

(Sr. Ma. Adelina Portilio, SPC)

The lovely creek Back of the house; But what a stench! It really does stink! Everybodys nose Is simply offended; Pity the poor creek, Is it its own fault? Nature that you are. Gods own creation; Originally clean,

Now you stink? Be mindful, O man! The trash you dump, The dirt you deposit, Makes the creek sick. Let the creek alone, To do its own function; Free it from pollution, Restore its reputation! Cebu 1-02-86 ANALYSIS: The lovely creek Back of the house; But what a stench! It really does stink! The article the pertains to the lovely creek which distinguishes it from other water body forms. A creek is a body of water with a current, confined within a bed and steam banks (a small stream). The adjective lovely is used to describe the creek which has a beauty that appeals to the emotions as well as to the eye. A creek signifies Gods wonders and love in our world. It shows the beauty and strength of nature. Creek represents how beautiful and adventurous life is. Person only lives once and the journey are full of trials. The word stench which means a strong and unpleasant smell is used as a noun, thus representing the creek found at the back of the house. The adjective stink is used to describe the very disagreeable and unpleasant smell of the creek. Sad to say, people that are oblivious to their surroundings are increasing. What they do is just criticize and complain. Most of the people would rattle on how disgusting the creek looks and smells like. But they dont bother to put an action instead they add insult and continue their destruction. Everybodys nose Is simply offended; Pity the poor creek, Is it its own fault? Everybodys nose portrays wrath and patience. The nose is the organ of smelling, which rejoices in a pleasant odor, and can be offended by a stench. People would likely to appreciate the breeze coming from the creek or any forms of water. They would stay for a while to inhale the fresh air that would relax their body and soul. However, once the unsullied air is altered with the smell of garbage with less than a second people would not even think of staying. Pity the emotion of sadness for the misfortune of the poor creek. The poor creek depicts the

situation of the once lovely creek which is misused by the people. The creek that once gave a living proof of how lively life is, but now represents a dead man. Nature that you are. Gods own creation; Originally clean, Now you stink? The nature is our environment, the plants, the animals, the trees, the seas, the rivers, the soil, and our surroundings. God created every life and wonders present here on earth. He put love and care in doing so. He puts everything in perfection that he made us to love, to care, to cherish, and to protect His creation. He doesnt want imperfection that He gave us His children freewill and intellect. The consequences are, we abused the freedom we acquire. We are not protecting His creation instead bit by bit we are destroying it. Be mindful, O man! The trash you dump, The dirt you deposit, Makes the creek sick. The man symbolizes the nation. The trash and dirt is regarded as the waste and pollutants thrown into the waters that cause water pollution. We must be aware of what we are doing. In every action, we have to take into consideration the consequences that go with our decision. Reflect, ask questions, and contemplate, would this decision bring goodness to all or would it put an end to the existence of ones life. Let the creek alone, To do its own function; Free it from pollution, Restore its reputation! The big word alone, alone in the sense that man should not put anything that would ruin the beauty and existence of the creek, what we ought to do is appreciate what we have. The phrase to do its own function, tell us to let the creek display its own beauty and offer hope and life to everyone. Let the creek show the goodness and love god has given us. Free and restore this two words give us challenge that will urge us to bring back the lovely creek. A dare we need to face to save our remaining resources of water. People need to work together to reduce water pollution. Dont be afraid as you can see, each of us can contribute something. Even the simple things like not throwing garbage in creeks are a big help. EPILOGUE: Everyone needs to understand that preventing water pollution is to our benefit, and to the benefit of the life around us. So, it is very important that each one works towards reducing pollutants for safe and pure water.

Id like to leave you with this thought Five hundred years ago, there was an entire new world to be explored and settled, but today theres nowhere else for us to go. We have to live with what we have, and we cant let it go to waste because we dont have the time to care. We have to act now so that we will have a future worth saving.
