1. STATEMENT OF THE PUPILS PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The students in fifth year focus on the theory and drawing details from September
to Christmas. This means that the students have explored and researched a large
portion of the theory in the Construction Studies syllabus.

The topics they have covered in the theory classes are: Heritage, Planning,
Substructure of houses (foundations), Structure (walls, roofs, windows, doors,
etc.).

They students also have been completing one building detail drawing each week.
They have done all the drawing details that could be asked which include the
foundations, roof details, window details, floor details and door details. The
teacher informed me that a few of the students can struggle with this aspect of the

syllabus. So I will need to pay particular attention to this.

The students also have a good skills base at this stage of the course as they
practice for one class a week the various joints. They have completed joints such
as tenon, bridle, halving and dovetail joints.

Therefore most of the students have the ability to use the tools correctly and
safely. Some students may need to be reminded about health and safety.

They have also begun thinking about possible Leaving Certificate Projects so they
have been developing their design and sketching skills in this process.

They also have improved their research skills in exploring possible design
solutions for their projects.

The majority of students have mastered the skills in the practical class such as
using power tools like the drill, scroll saw, belt sanders and jigsaws. Once again a
few students may need extra help in the area. They have also had experience in
using machines like the lathe for completing turned objects for projects. This
shows that they have developed a wide rain of skills and knowledge of various
tools.

2. RATIONALE FOR THE SELECTION & STRUCTURING OF SUBJECT

MATTER AND FOR THE METHODOLOGY

Over the course of the week the students attend three separate blocks of
construction studies class. Therefore, these blocks are broken down into three
different areas which are important to the students studying this class. Hence, this
is why the subject will be structured as follows.

One double class will be focused on the theory aspect of the subject. The theory
in construction studies contains all aspects of building a house from planning
stages to finished product.

The single class will be used for developing the students practical skills. It is vital
that the students keep their hand tool skills to the desired level during the course

of the construction studies course.

The final double class of the week will be a drawing class. In this class the
students will complete building detail drawings. This enables them to familiarize
themselves with the standard dimensions and allows them see the detail that is
involved in building these details. It also gives the opportunity to connect the
drawing with the theory on the details.

In regards to the selection of the theory that I will teach. It is the logical next step
to introduce water supply. When the house has been built you must connect to the
water supply and begin the plumbing of the house. This area will include direct
and indirect water systems and the pipe works involved in getting the water to the
dwelling. In the theory class I will try explore and relate the theory that is being
studied to the students lives so they can understand the application of the topic. It
is important in teaching to make it relevant to the pupil.

I have decided to challenge the students in the practical class with a complex
dovetail joint. They have all completed the basic joints as well as a dovetail. By
making the dovetail smaller in size and more testing for students will develop
their skills and well as recapping on previous knowledge. It is important that
when revisiting an area that you drill deeper and I will try achieve this in the class.
This class structure is based on Bruners spiral curriculum where you know what
the students know and can do but you are now challenging them further and
expanding their knowledge of the subject area. This is a very important technique
to use in teaching in order to develop the child to their fullest potential.

The drawing details that I have picked, the students will have already completed
previously. This will be a form of revision as well as concreting the details in the
students mind through the use of other methods, which will help achieve better
quality learning. This will be showing the students real models and examples of
the components of the in the drawing detail. This can be linked to Piagets model
where u provide visuals and concrete examples for students to learn best.

Construction studies lends itself to the use of a vast majority of resources and in

my teaching I will try exploit as many of these possibilities as I can to enable

quality, fun and interactive learning for the students. The use of models and real
live samples will be important aspects of the teaching of this subject.

The incorporation of some discussion times and aspects where the learning will
allow the students lead the way will encourage an adult relationship and so
developing the students in other ways and not just in the subject area. It will allow
the students develop their confidence and self-esteem and become better
communicators by the end of the scheme. Socialization of students is of great
importance and teachers have a huge influence on this when interacting closely
with the students and getting to know them better.

The idea of getting to know the students makes this like linking to relevant things
in students lifes much easier.

3. AIMS
The aims of this scheme are to

Develop the hand tool skills of the students.

Improve the execution of the dovetail joint with more complex measurements.

Reiterate best practice and safety in the class room.

Introduce the students to water systems and supply into a dwelling.

Complete activity based learning through group work.

Familiarize the students with the materials used in the water systems.

Explore how we can improve water systems to make them more environmentally
friendly.

Examine the drawing details and relate the measurements to real life examples of
the object.

Generate quality, neat drawings of the details assigned to the students.

Promote equality in the classroom among the students.

Improve the students communication skills between each other and the teacher.

Instill self-esteem in the students by promoting discussion sessions where all

students have to participate and complete presentations of work to the class.

Allow students to formulate opinions and give scope for the student to express
these ideas in the class.

Highlight to the students the importance of water and systems and how it can
affect health issues. Students will value and think critically on these things when
you have made them more aware of their surroundings.

Socialize the students to become respectful and caring human beings that will fit
into society and also change society for the better.

4. LEARNING OUTCOMES & CORRESPONDING ASSESSMENTS

5. NUMERACY & LITERACY STRATEGY

Ways in which I will include numeracy and literacy in the scheme are:

On working drawings leave scope for the students to work out some of the missing
measurements.

Encourage the students to calculate the scale on their own during drawing class.

Reinforce measurements and units of measurement.

Write new words on the board when they crop up.

Label the drawing details correctly and neat.

Presentations will develop the students to speak well and developing literacy.

Activity sheets with words and puzzles which maths may be needed to solve.

Word corner new words and students will visit regularly and have to present a
word.

Time out game countdown to encourage students to do mathematics on the spot

and quickly.

6. DIFFERENTIATION STRATEGY

In the construction studies class there are three girls the rest are boys. It is good to
see a few girls in the Construction studies course as due to socialization many girls
do not take part in this class. It is the same for boys in the Home economics class.

There are no foreign nationals in the class.

I was informed by the teacher that there is also no student with a diagnosed
Special Education Need in the class. However, I will keep a close eye on the
students and if I feel the need to bring any situation to the teachers attention I will
do so for the benefit of the child.

Regards mixed ability I have not been notified of any major differences in the
class regarding ability and attainment. However, I will take notes as the classes go
by in the case of any mixed ability problems arising. I will also have a number of
resources prepared at all times for differentiation as it is common place in all
classrooms.

Strategies :

During group work I will consider the best way to divide the girls. This will also
benefit me in my research for my thesis. It is important to consider the learning
styles of girls do differ to boys and is something that will needed to be handled
with care in certain situations. Also students will take natural roles in groups and
may cause some students to sit passively during these sessions. On way to resolve
this is by giving the pupils roles in the group which they have to stick to.

If I notice any mixed ability issues arising I will ensure I have differentiated
worksheets and drawings. I will also try encourage the stronger students to help
the weaker students reach the goal for the class. This is a form and application of
Vygotskys theory of Zone of proximal development. Often a person closer to the
child level can help bridge this gap quicker and easier.

If in the practical class any students are noticeably weaker I will simplify the
dovetail joint. Peer teaching will also be employed in the practical class.

Likewise during the drawing class I may supply sheets which have the detail
started. This will enable these students to get the detail completed in class time
along with the others.

During presentations students will have different personalities and some may not
be at all comfortable talking in front of class mates. This will be considered and
will try be developed over the time with the students.
