Legal issues

The data protection act 1998 controls how your personal information is used by organisations, businesses or the government. Everyone must abide by this rule. Those who collect data abide by the rules known as the data protection principles.

This law is design to protect personal data stored either in computers or paper filing systems.
The original version was published in the 1980s and was then strengthened in 1998. More detailed laws to govern the whereabouts of your online information where introduced in 2003 The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI Act). gives people privileges of access to recorded data held by public authorities. in response to a request, the general public authority must tell the applicant if it holds the data, and must ordinarily supply it within20 working days.

The BBC

The BBC collect and use the information fairly (i.e. making it clear to people how they intend to use their information and whether it will be given to anyone else inside or outside the BBC) The BBC store and use the information securely, for example, by using encrypted memory sticks or CD-ROMs and in accordance with any further applicable guidelines issued by the BBC and disposed of securely once the use for which it has been collected has come to an end

The BBC only collect information that is necessary for the BBC anything more will be a breach on either data protection act 1998 or the freedom of information act 2000
