It is one of the pioneer books which presents an incisive analysis of the psychosocial and empowerment issues of adolescent girls particularly in the rural belt. Elucidating on the issues of sexuality and socialization, their impact on the psyche of girls has been dwelt into in great detail. It contains a vivid and sensitive portrayal of case studies and illustrations of their life that are spilled over the pages from cover to cover The book explores the world of rural adolescent girls, their social and psychological journey to adulthood, the process of their subjugation and subordination, their desires and dreams, their joys and thrills, their myths and misconceptions, their unanswered questions and queries, their fears and imposed restrictions, their notions about marriage and life, opportunities and exploitations. Information is power and the book throws light on how an impoverished uninformative environment leads to several miseries of their life, how the family itself becomes an impediment in the growth and development process of the girls, how the love of parents for their daughters chains them due to pressure of social norms and values and due to fear of sexual abuse. The case studies and the testimonies by women show how socialization process kills empathy among women for their your own self, how women are socialised to promote patriarchy and alienate from other women and girls. Women who have themselves undergone adolescence have totally for gotten the miseries and confusions of life and consider their own daughters a burden. This book not only enumerates the life of adolescent girls but also suggests the process oriented empowerment approaches, the strategies, the training methodologies and content to work with both adolescent boys and girls and change the face of society. Aadolescents constitute a large section of the population: 19% globally and 21.4% in India. The young people (10-24) are soon going to be 30% of the world population. Also it is a period of heightened energy, which if channelised and guided, can result in a constructive outcome. Allowed to take its own course, (usually along with extreme control and punishment) it may be destructive for self and/or the society. Yet, unfortunately this grop is merged either with children or women for policy development and programs. Whatever programs and plans are there it is in reference to their reproductive role and controlling their reproduction or now in refernce to their education. They are never considered as individuals with all rights. The book emphasizes the urgent need to recognize adolescents as a separate age group for all policy and development programs as the needs and the strategies to work with them will be different than for adults and children. It also emphasizes the need to work with adolescent boys as well as their parents to empower them in real sense. the process of social change is much faster if one works with adolescents because working with adolescents means working with three generations simultaneously: adolescents themselves and their peers; the adults i.e., their parents, elder brothers and sisters-in-law, uncles and aunties; and the generation to come for whom these adolescents become a model of help directly and consciously. The book is published by Books for Chnge: Kitaben Nahin Andolan. Their main focus is on books which may play a significant role in the development of society and nation.     An attempt to mainstream adolescent issues in the Eleventh Plan of India and elaborating upon planning and project implementation

    for adolescent boys and girls, this book would benefit those who wish to understand the psychosocial world of adolescents. Adolescence, though one of the most crucial, vulnerable and impressionable stage in life, has not been a priority for policy makers. This book advocates recognizing adolescence as a separate age group for policy development to attain sustainable and long-term solutions to development goals and issues of rights and equity.

    The World of Adolescent Girls

    Dr. Manju Agrawal, a social activist, a researcher and a teacher is presently Director, Amity Institute of Behavioral and Allied Sciences. She is Ph.D in Psychology from Allahabad University with specialization in stress management, behavior change communication and gender issues. For the Eleventh Plan of GOI, she has been nominated as member of the Steering Committee on Empowerment of Women and Development of Children. Former Director of Mahila Samakhya, U.P. and advisor to Path, she has worked extensively in areas of domestic violence, girls education, gender sensitization and reproductive health. She has published and presented papers in National and International Journals and seminars respectively. She has been bestowed with ICPD advancement Award 2004.
