My initial interest in research was the lab work we did in the first 2 years of my course, I thoroughly
enjoyed this and the extensive research done by my University department fascinated me. This growing
interest made me very keen to gain experience in research, so for this I thought of a topic that interested
me and found a lecturer who was willing to supervise me over a summer project. This project was unpaid
and I thoroughly enjoyed it, although there was a lot of repetitive tasks, and results had to be carried out
multiple times, I still enjoyed it as I found the multiple problems I came across challenging and
stimulating, ideas were pooled together with the research team to deduce the best way to overcome each
problem. The experience has made clear to me research is the business area that is perfect for me.

I initially heard of Unilever at a University careers even where I was told about the company and made
aware of the multiple household brands the company is responsible for, I was very impressed. I was aware
that Unilever carries out a lot of research to develop and improve their products. I am attracted to
Unilever because working to develop products that can help many people worldwide coming up with
innovative ideas is just what I want, the job would allow me to use problem solving skills very regularly
which I enjoy and find intellectually stimulating. Also, I have very high ethical values, having worked in
a psychiatric nursing home where the working standards were poor and the treatment of residents in my
opinion unacceptable (this is also the opinion of many others as 2 years after my placement the home got
closed down due to neglect), I'm determined to work for a company with high ethical values as Unilever
has, shown by its sustainable living plan, and the companies high value of health, hygiene and sustainable
living.

I have all the skills Unilever looks for in an employee. I have a real bias for action, this is shown by the
fact that I went to a high school with a pass rate much lower than the national average, in fact most
subjects were taught to a maximum of a C grade to try maximise the pass rate. I was determined to go
above and beyond this so I worked above what was expected to get the best GCSE's in my year group
including many A's and A*'s. Also, I have great teamwork skills developed from my summer project, as

well as from an anti-bullying DVD project I was involved in that was distributed nationwide and
experience in a Young enterprise business project. I have great leadership skills shown by my
management of a local book club that I organise, as well as my 2 year experience as a sports leader. I have
been able to develop extensive communication skills from my voluntary work at a psychiatric nursing
home and the local hospital chaplaincy,
