Writing Equations of Lines There are three scenarios with different pieces of information that will allow you to write the equation of a line. You can have: a point and a slope a y-intercept and a slope two points

Whenever you are given information about a linear equation, associate this information with point-slope form or slope-intercept form. Finding the Equation of a Line with a Slope and a Point Example 1 Find an equation of the line that slope 4 and passes through the point (1,1). Write the equation in slope-intercept form. First think: what form of a line would be easiest to find with the information given?

Finding the Equation of a Line with the Slope and Y-Intercept Example 2 Find the equation of a line with slope and a y-intercept -3. Think First: what form of a line is the easiest to find with the information given?

Finding the Equation of a Line with Two Points Example 3 Find the equation of a line that passes through the points (1,3) and (2,5).

First use the formula for slope to find the slope, then use point-slope form to find the equation of the line.

Now use a point and a slope to find the equation in point-slope form, then convert to slopeintercept form.
