This paper deals with the ways of expressing the future in the Serbian Alexander Ro
mance in the framework of grammaticalization theory. The critical edition used for this re
search is based on the 16th century Serbian Church Slavonic text of lower style, which origi
nated in the Prizren-Timok dialectal area. The aim of the paper was to provide an insight into
the ways of adapting Serbian Church Slavonic to Old Serbian in the domain of the future
tense, having in mind that the Prizren-Timok dialect was heavily influenced by the conver
gent processes in the Balkan Sprachbund during its development.

EXPRESSING THE FUT UR E IN THE SERBIAN ALEX ANDER ROM ANCE
S u m m a r y
The future tense is a relatively new grammatical category in the Slavic languages, just emerging
at the end of the Proto-Slavic per iod, and its development can be traced through the history of those
lang uages. In Old Church Slavonic there was not a grammaticalized fut ure tense form. Reference to
the fut ure could be marked in two ways: by the present of the imperfective/perfective verbs (the so
called Simple Fut ure) or by paraph rases consisting of the present tense of imti, chotti and nati
+ inf initive of the perfective/imperfective verb (the so called Per iph rastic Fut ure). The present of
perfective verbs and inf initive constructions with imti were the most frequent forms with a fut ure
meaning and they were the most independent ones.
The goal of this paper was to examine fut ure tense forms in the Serbian Alexander Romance
(SA) and to determine to what deg ree Old Serbian (vernacular) might have inf luenced its lang uage
in this respect. The 16th cent ury transcript of SA, written in the lower functional style of Serbian
Church Slavonic, originated in the Priz ren-Timok dialectal zone.
The analysis showed that, in the lang uage of SA, the fut ure was expressed with the patterns
inher ited from Old Church Slavonic but in a slightly modif ied form with a change in their fre
quency as well as in semantics. The greatest deviation from Old Church Slavonic, as well as from the
Serbian Church Slavonic texts written in high functional style, is the increase of the frequency of

chotti + inf initive with pure fut ure meaning. The frequency relation of per iph rastic constructions
with the verbs imti and chotti as fut ures in SA is expressed by the proportion 6.4:1, while in the
Codex Mar ianus the proportion is 12:1. Regarding the semantics, these verbs have a higher deg ree
of desemantization in relation to Old Church Slavonic. In all of the examples, imti + inf initive
(used in all persons) expressed the meaning of prediction, while the meaning of obligation is not
conf irmed. On the other hand, the verb chotti maintained its volitive-intentional meaning. Generally
speaking, the sit uation in SA indicates a state of competition, i.e. all forms can be fou nd in the same
context with no difference in meaning. The systematic polysemy, which existed in South Slavic at the
time of the creation of Old Church Slavonic, was inher ited by Serbian Church Slavonic. It is justif ied
from the typological point of view and testif ies to an incomplete process of the grammaticalization
of the fut ure tense as a full-fledged category. The only innovation we fou nd in SA is the increase of
the per iph rastic form with chotti, which can be att ributed to the inf luence of the vernacular.
