Issue of Caucus: Political Unrest in Turkey Delegate: Fayadh Ahmed of the Arab Republic of Egypt

The unrest in Turkey started out as small peaceful protests opposing the governments urban development plan for Istanbuls Taksim Gezi Park. The handling of the protests by law enforcement caused an outrage, which then led to a wave of anti-government protests across the country. The protestors revolved around views of freedom of expression, freedom of press, and questions on Turkeys Secularism. Amnesty Internationals report; Gezi Park protests: Brutal denial of the right to peaceful assembly in Turkey , details how over 8000 people were injured by, the use of live ammunition, tear gas, plastic bullets, sexual harassment and the beating of peaceful protestors that have resulted in at least four deaths. Egypt has had long standing relations with Turkey, but in light of recent affairs they have become strained. Egypt would like to continue building on their strategic partnership with Turkey, but Turkey must understand that Egypt cannot do that unless its policies are revised. In Conclusion, the people of Turkey believe the government is turning away from democracy and becoming increasingly authoritarian. The republic of Egypt understands this and urges the Turkish government to reassess its policies. The Delegate yields the floor to the chair.
