Agenda: Tackling worldwide unemployment and addressing its root causes

Unemployment. It is a term every single one of us have come across at least a few times in our lifetimes. It is something we seek to avoid at all costs. No single country in the world is completely devoid of this economic evil. What can it be attributed to? For example, a person could end up unemployed because he/she did not have a proper schooling during his/her childhood, a factor that is rather unfortunate. The only way to provide such people jobs and income is by first improving the education system in countries. But, the truly astonishing thing is that, today, even multilingual, well-educated people are unemployed. How, and why does this happen? It is not uncommon for someone to lose their job because of their failure to accomplish something. In todays fast-paced, everaccelerating world, there is no room for employees who cannot keep up with the pace of rapidly-expanding economy. The situation is no different in Spain, a country of rich and varied

heritage, but one where the unemployment rate overall is a staggering 27.16% overall. In Spain, one major factor for unemployment is the problem of language. A startling majority of the population are illiterate in English, the global language of communication in most sectors of the economy. Unable to converse with their colleagues in English, many workers are ousted from their positions purely because of this incapability of theirs. Another important factor is the immigration rate. The sheer number of Latin people settled in countries all over the world is enough to make any great mathematician err in his calculations. What is the reason behind so many people leaving their native country? What do they leave in pursuit of? Why is what they seek not available in Spain itself? Or does it exist, and is not being optimally utilized? All these questions and more will be the principal topics of discussion during the 3 days of SANMUN. Can unemployment be eradicated? Or will it prove to be a plague that will haunt the economy forever?
