IT sector in India
IT industry in India comprises of software industry and information technology enabled services (ITES), which also includes business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. India is considered as a pioneer in software development and a favorite destination for ITenabled services.

also gained immensely from the availability of a robust infrastructure (telecom, power and roads) in the country.

Economic growth from IT sector


The revenue of the information technology sector has risen from 1.2 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 1997-98 to an estimated 5.8 per cent in 2008-09.

Indian IT services market is estimated to remain the fastest growing in the Asia-Pacific region with a compound annual growth rate of 18.6 per cent. At present, there are 60 million Internet users in the country. According to the Manufacturers Association of IT (MAIT), the number of active Internet entities rose to 8.6 million by March 2009 from 7.2 million units in March 2008.

MAIT has outlined 'Goal 511', an ambitious target that talks about 500 million Internet users, 100 million broadband connections and 100 million connected devices by 2012.

In the year 2000, President of United States, Bill Clinton complimented India on its achievements in high technology areas citing the example of Infosys. Software and Services (IT-BPO) exports to exceed $31 billion in FY 2006-07, a 32.6 percent growth Employment in sector to exceed 1.6 million up from 1.28 million 2006.

Indian Service Providers have grown their share of contracts of values in excess of $50 million dollars from 1 percent in 2002 to 7 percent in 2006 Offshore product development and engineering services to drive increased IP creation
